Hello, I was put on risperdal for about 5 weeks and I gained about 25 pounds during that time. I was also extremely depressed and lethargic during that time Now I'm losing that. Anyone else have this experience?

I'm on risperdal, and it's one of my better meds. I haven't gained any weight while on it, but I do have the lethargy. The atypical antipsychotics really affect everyone differently though. It's the only antipsychotic I'm willing to be on.

You should talk to your Pdoc .. Rapid weight gain can be from the medication and could be setting you up for other health problems.

Good Luck

I agree...visit your doc and let her/him know about the problems with it. The lethargy and depression can be due to the fact that antipsychotics are also known as neuroleptics or major tranquilizers. As such, most of their effect is on the frontal lobe of the brain, thus accounting for the "dulling" of psychotic symptoms, but also the "dulling" of mood and energy. Of course, as mentioned, meds do not affect everyone in the same way (yes, lactation because it affects prolactin and can happen in women and men, and other idiosyncratic side effets) Good luck to you; talk this over with your doc.

I'm a guy, and I started to lactate (which isn't cool) while using risperdal. So I didn't like it much.

I gained 70 pounds in three months. I also did not receive my period for almost a year because of it- I had high prolactin levels. It also made me feel lethargic.

I tolerated risperdal really well for 7-8 years without gaining weight, but once I passed 45 years old, I started gaining alot. In the last 3 years, I've gained about 20 pounds. Not sure if it's the risperdal or not.

I don't know whether I can attribute my prior weight gain to risperdal. I am losing weight now though, watching what I eat. I've been on risperdal 4 years and it has not made me depressed, rather it flattened out my mood. I'd rather not be on it for that reason, and for fear of getting TD in the future, however my symptoms preclude me from stopping it (unless I switched to something else). Also, I am still lethargic on it, another reason I wish I could get off of it.

I'm also on risperidal. I've been on it for about 5 weeks and have gained about 12lbs, which isn't particulary helping me feel any better, but I'm willing too see where this med takes me. So far I haven't noticed any changes in my thought patterns, etc. But I know it can take longer than 5 wks to feel the effects. I figure I will wait it out if my weight gain stops here. If it continues I'm going to see about other options. Good luck

Just breezing thru and saw this...just blurting that in '04 or so I put on 55lbs in 8 months...felt drunk when awake without the giddy feelgoodness of alcohol and wound up with pains in my heart. I quit it.

I would have considering popping my Doc in th' snoot!

Well...maybe not...but I would have cussed the walls blue and flushed the buggers down the nearest bog.

Risperdal is the only AP that can get me through a manic phase if used for a maximum of 2 weeks. However I cannot use it as maintenance.. When I took Risperdal for a period of 4 months, I experienced heel pain, my breasts were bigger and I wasn't menstruating...
