Here is my dilemma, some of which I posted elsewhere, I am on Lexapro but I for my Obsesiive Compulsive Disorder but I still have panic attacks a few times a week. I have been told that there are more effective medications specifically to treat OCD symptoms however my husband and I are trying to conceive a child and I am told these better OCD meds aren't as safe as Lexapro. A psychiatrist recommended the following for OCD : Luvox or Anafranil but he said it wasn't safe in pregnancy. So he told me to try Prozac to which I said no to because I had very bad side effects on Prozac. So I am faced with the dilemma of finding an effective OCD med to target my OCD and alleviate my obsessions and panic attacks and at the same time ensuring it is safe for a child. Being off medication is not an option for me since I tried it and almost had a nervous breakdown for a 2 time. By the way I am on Klonopin 1mg daily which I take as a PRN. Also, I should say I have been on Zoloft and Celexa which like Lexapro helps but not as much as it probably should since I am able to have roughly 5 or more panic attacks weekly. I would greatly appreciate any advice!! You guys are all so wonderful. Thank god for this web site!!!!

Hi Jennifer, I also have OCD. Keep me updated on what you find. We are adjusting my dosage of lexapro, but so far no other meds have been introduced.

SG3 - The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as a group are "relatively" safe when used in pregnancy. Probably the best SSRI for panic disorder (also OCD and social phobias) is Paxil (paroxetine) because of it's antimuscarinic activity which gives the drug a calming effect.
All SSRIs, as a typical start-up side effect, increase the number of panic attacks and raise anxiety levels until the brain adjusts to the drug. This takes approximately two to four weeks. So, stick with the Lexapro (escitalopram) until the babe is weaned; or, if you are getting too many panic attacks for your liking, maybe give Paxil another try. The important thing is to keep an open dialogue going with your doctor. Also keep a log of your attacks and take them with you to your appointments. There are also relaxation techniques (deep breathing, meditation, etc.) that you can ask your doctor about. These are non-drug interventions that are safe and easy to do. I hope that this is of some help. - Cam |
