I have been having trouble sleeping for many years which has always been because of my anxiety. I wake up and worry, then sleep awhile again, then wake up and worry etc..... It's always the same. She took me off the trazadone my first pdoc prescribed and I haven't had a decent night of sleep since then. She recently gave me vistaril. Does anyone know anything about this drug. Just wondering if it will actually help with the anxiety so that I can get some sleep.

Vistaril can be helpful. It is an antihistamine, like benedryl. Did you know that the first antidepressants were based on antihistamine? It reduced both depression and anxiety. I haven't taken Vistaril, but I know people who like it.

I've taken it. I would describe it as helpful, but mild. Former pdoc said some people find it extremely sedating (too impaired to drive type of sedating). I did not have that side effect, but I felt it relaxed me a little.

Good luck,
EJ

I've tried it also. It helped with my sleeping issues I was having. It helped me to fall and stay asleep through the night. My only concern is that I was taking it in the interim until my Trileptal dosage was at the correct level to help with my sleep. I started with 25mg and that was not enough, I had to move up to 50mg a couple of weeks later to get any relief. Luckily I didn't have to go up any higher because Trileptal began to work, but I don't know if Vistaril is something that has to keep being increased in dosage because you develop a tolerance or if it is for regular use. But it did help me for short term use.

Vistaril is sort of a catch-all med. It is an anti-histamine, but gets used for various things. I was given vistaril to help with nausea as a side effect of another med. Helped with the nausea and made me very sleepy, which I suppose would help with anxiety if I was anxious. It isn't specifically an anti-anxiety med, however.

I take visteril for anxiety and it has a very good effect on me. It works so well that i dont have to take as much xanax which is good. i am on 50 mg for a year now and i still get the same sleep effect as when i started. Good luck with it i hope it works well for you too.
