A little background:
At age 24 I had a partial hysterectomy due to severe edemeterosis and in hopes to help my PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and pituitary tumor (non cancer - prolactin). Had MANY effects that disrupted my daily life. For 5 years I have felt great, no pain or anything else. However, for the last 6 months or so I have been on a study downhill fall with a lot of the effects, including pain coming back. I saw my OB/GYN doctor (the same one that took care of me all these years) and he pushed depression on me after I told him that I was not depressed because I only have the effects 2 week out of the month then the other 2 weeks (round about) I am fine. He said for me to try Wellburtin to see if it will help because it may even regulate my hormones some. So he put be on 300mg Wellburtin XL once daily. I am 2 1/2 weeks in and I feel completely worse then before I was taking it. For the first 2 days I was steady vomitting. Now I just feel real foggy, every time I eat I get bad cramps in my stomach, and I get a really bad migraine every afternoon that lasts an hour or so. But so bad I have to almost stop working because I can not focus. I have called my doctor and he said he wants me to stay on it atleast 8 weeks to see if it helps. I do not think I can take going through this much longer - for sure not 5 1/2 more weeks. Has anyone had these type of issues? Do they go away? I was also told that my doctor should not have put me on such a dose to start off with and me never have taken anything like this before. I don't know what to do - it seems like my doctor just doesn't want to deal with me.

Hi candiak.

Please Help W/ Wellburtin

I would say 300 mg Wellbutrin is causing side effects that you have mentioned. I started to get similar side effects as well. There was also concern from my doctor to be on 300 mg Wellbutrin once a day because it lower the seizure threshold. In other words, I would be more likely to suffer from seizures if I continued with 300 mg once a day.

If dose 150 mg could be in AM and then 6 hours later have 150 mg, that might decrease the side effects. It did for me. Also, be aware that I had to take it earlier than 4 pm because it made it difficult to fall asleep. Hope my experience with Wellbutrin helps you decide on what you need to do. Just remember that everyone may have different responses to medications.

Seems a little strange to START at 300mg, usually it is tapered up. Hopefully if you continue to take it you will get relief from the side effects soon

It seems as though your doctor is convinced you have a PMS related mood disorder (does exist.) However, I am weirded out over the idea that he is giving you an antidepressant to help something that seems more likely to be a hormonal issue. AD's act on neurotransmitters, not hormonal.

300 isn't the highest dose, but it is high and it may have been more appropriate to start on 150 before barraging your brain with such a strong effect.

I think you should seek another professional opinion.

Why is an OB/GYN prescribing anti-depressants? Psychotropic medications are way out of his field of expertise, in my opinion. Go see a psychiatrist. It sounds more like you have PMDD, a severe form of PMS. I forget what anti-depressant is usually prescribed for that but it isn't Wellbutrin. Just my two cents.
Thanks for this!
