My doc has put me on ritalin for my extreme lack of energy. However, it seems to work the opposite of how it was supposed to. I'm tired, moving around even less, and feeling more depressed than before. Anyone know why it is, medications seem to react the opposite on me? I don't use and never have used street drugs, but the lingo is quicker to use for an attempted expanation. Uppers bring me down and downers seem to energize. How come???? I have tried ephdera years ago, saw it in a truck stop, it said it was good for keeping truckers awake--made me take a nap.
What can I possibly suggest to my doc? I really had high hopes for the ritalin. She checked my thyroid before prescribing the ritalin and said it was 'slightly' elavated. Makes no sense-I'm a living example of lethargic. Could being slightly elevated and on ritalin make me tired? What if I take something to bring the thyroid back to normal, will I be more zombie like? or will that magically snap me back to a normal living level? My hubby is getting so annoyed that I don't do anything. And so am I. It's beautiful outside right now-sunny in the 80's, just what I've been waiting for. I haven't been outside. I've gained an average of 10 pounds a year since I've been with my hubby (4 yrs) and with summer so close, it just really bummed me out. Ritalin side effects that I read about, I thought I'd even take care of the weight issues. But no, I take the med and sit and stare. Help please-anyone. |

Tracy,
There is a technical term for this, I've read about it on the Internet before. I'll check on it when I get home from work this afternoon and see if I can find the article. If I can I'll post it for you. Wish I could be more help right now, but I have heard of others having the opposite effects with meds before. I'll see what I can find. If Cam sees this he may have the answer too. bp "Life is 10% what you make it, and 90% how you take it." |

I'll trade doctors with you, ha!ha! I am in the "lethargic abyss" too and growing more depressed, my doc told me "NO" to any stimulants, he's afraid I can get manic, I am BPII. I am thinking of looking for another doctor cause I can't go on like this, I don't even want to wake up in the morning and getting things done lately is like a huge struggle for me. If your thyroid is imbalanced and they give you thyroid med. you should return to your normal metabolism. It is important that your thyroid bloodwork should include TSH level besides the T3 and T4. They have found many times in the past that docs. should give you meds. for T3 and T4 at the same time for the best efficiency. TSH is thyroid stimulating hormone if levels are too low or too high you may become hypothyroid or hyperthyroid. Interesting the ritalin made you tired, people with ADD/ADHD will get mellowed from it, people not having ADD/ADHD will usually get stimulated (revved) but then again everyone's system is different. Make sure you keep on your doctor
