I've figured out that if I take 250mg of Seroquel, I sleep. However, I have the horrible hangover effect the next day and am not quite 100% functional for a long while after getting up. Anyone know of some way to combat this? If I take less Seroquel, I don't sleep, so that's not an option.

I too have experienced a "hangover effect" from seroquel. The highest dose I took was 100mg at bedtime though. Even that low for me I suspect is similar to what you experience on 250mg. How many hours of sleep are you typically getting? My adjustment to timing of taking it (10pm was target time but I rarely did before 11:30pm) and how many hours of sleep really had an impact on how long it took me to "snap out of it" and function somewhat at my full time 8-5 job. Even with adjustment to duration of sleep 100 was too much for me I couldn't take how out of it I felt. I've since adjusted from 100 to 25 and back on 50 now (I take Latuda also at bedtime).
Not sure that's helpful info? I love the sedating effect of seroquel and the added benefit of helping me stabalize moods I wouldn't give it up for anything.
Perhaps adjust timing of taking it and stretch out hours of sleep you get each night if possible?

ok how long have u been taking 250?

the thing with any medication to sleep is that.......

if u take it every single night, eventually u will need more and more to sleep

and the hangover.... after a while your body will get used to it

I don't have experience with seroquil but I do with thorazine wich is very similar

I went from 25mg to 200/500..... and eventually I was waking up every hour on 500mg...

it stopped working..... I lowered the dose and I could sleep better......

but these sedative drugs can make a person lazy if your taking a lot of it

its just from the sedation u will find yourself sitting around more

I find it takes a week to adjust to a new dose and work through the "hangover". I'm on 500 now although I have been on 850 in the past. Spent a year on 225 which was nice but good things never last for me, anyway I digress. Yer, coffee or tea in the morning and allow time to wake up so to speak. I get up 1 hour before I have to start getting dressed and functioning in the morning, have breakfast and a cuppa and I'm almost ok an hour and a half later. But I do appreciate it effects everyone differently.
Thanks for this!

I only recently went up to 250mg from 200mg because in the past I tried 300mg and my body couldn't handle that much, even after giving it a fair shot. How much I sleep greatly depends on the night, so I can't even say there's an average.

I take 600mg of Seroquel. The sedative effects of Seroquel stop at 400mg... Anyways. Why I had to point that out I don't know... It took about 4 months of nightly use to get used to Seroquel. I now take my Seroquel about 1.5 hours before bedtime. I sleep a solid 7-8 hours. I wake right up, no hangover (now) and feel rested. How long have you been taking Seroquel? Even if you lower the dose you will probably still have the hangover effect. I know it sucks. But Seroquel just sucks until your body gets used to it. However, I would rather take Seroquel over Lunesta or Ambien. Even with its marked side effects. I only have experience with the IR version, none with the XR version.

I was on Seroquel for about a year, then I swithed to Latuda for a few months, and about 2 months ago I switched back to Seroquel. I don't get any hangover effect at 200mg (never did), but if I go above that I do. I also don't sleep with 200mg, it needs to be more than that. At 200mg, Seroquel works great as a mood stabilizer for me, but that's about it.
Thanks for this!

Take it well before you want to sleep. I try for at least an hour before. The earlier you take it, the less hangover. You just need to find the right time where it still makes you fall asleep but has little or no hangover.

This isn't a typical experience. I've been on Seroquel for years and I haven't needed to up my dose to sleep.

I take it about an hour before bed. If I take it before that, I'll be sleeping in an hour, and if I take it less than an hour before, I'm lying in bed awake. I think it's a dose thing because I literally never had any side effects from 200mg but every time I've gone above that I have.

I think talking over with your pdoc might be good.
It does sound like a dose thing, plus different doses effect everyone differently.

I used to take 300mg of seroquel and while it did knock me out pretty fast, I never really experienced the "hang over" part.

I'm not seeing my pdoc for another 2 weeks. And upping the Seroquel was a compromise. There doesn't seem to be another option really...I've already tried most things for sleep with no luck. I may try 225mg and see if that works. It can't hurt.

I second the concept of taking it well before bed. I take my dose (12.5mg) about 2-2.5 hours before bed and it works like a charm. If I take it too close to bed, I'm up tossing and turning forever!

Wow...12.5mg? That's so little! Lol. That's probably why you can still be awake 2 hours after taking it. Even if I try to stay awake more than about an hour after taking mine I fall asleep.

diagnosed bp2 over 35 yrs. ago and never had insomnia til about a yr. ago. this is just my input: ambien put me to sleep but i can't stay asleep and pharmacist said ambien does nothing for racing thoughts; 1/2 xanax instead sometimes helped; klonopin instead sometimes helped; also for me 12.5 seroquel is the magic pill for me and rarely need to take the other 1/2. my psych nurse told me that seroquel works on different parts of the mania/depression as the dose increases when it's taken in the 100's (i.e., 200-400mg. works for, example, mania, and 400-600mg. works for depression, etc.) plz. don't quote me on the doses above..i've written the info. down but was merely using this as a way of passing on what i was told. even on 12.5 seroquel i do have slight hangover but i'm 67 and on medicare so i can do what i want in the a.m. w/o rush/stress so dealing w/hangover til after 1st cup of coffee isn't a big deal. i also do not have any of the racing thoughts at night on seroquel so for me it's been a god send.

I was on 200mg and couldn't function the next day. I was knocked out! I now have 25mg to take as needed and even then they are sedating and I'm weary to take it during the week

Depending on where my mood is at depends on what dose effects me or give me a hangover. I've gone from 900mg with no sedative effect or hangover to at the moment only needing 25 to knock me out and have me hungover half the next day. Seroquel XR also didnt leave me hungover. Unfortunately if its the only thing that works for sleep the hangover is just part of it.

I find 200 mg Seroquel helpful for anxiety and depression. It helps me sleep, too, but I end up needing to sleep for 9 hours instead of my normal (before-Seroquel) 7.5 hours. And I wake up hungover for several hours. It takes at least 12 hours from the time I take seroquel until I am functional. I tried going down to 100 mg but that resulted in high anxiety, depression and no sleep. 150 mg gives me the negative side effects of the 100 mg and 200 mg doses and not much help with anxiety and depression. Not sure what to do. Oh, and I've been on seroquel for two years.

I've been on Seroquel forever. 8-9 years maybe more. The lowest dose was 400 mg (in the beginning) and the highest was 875 mg. I've been stable on 600 mg for quite awhile now. I only sleep 4-5 hours and wake up with no hang over. I went back up to 800 mg last summer for a few months to get me thru a hard time but after 3 months went back to 600 mg. The increased dose definitely helped the extra depression I was going thru.

I found that it was a matter of time. Taking the first 25mg pill knocked me on my butt just as much as when it doubled to 50, then to 75 then 100. But after Id been on the same dose for a period of time, the 'tired' effect was the same, however I found better mood management. I take 50mg in the morning and barely feel it, just a slight warm, cozy feeling. I can still walk the kids to school, take the dog out. But the 100 at night gives me restless legs, so then i just go to bed. As soon as i go to bed though i pretty much fall asleep and the restless leg thing goes away. I take IR, not Xr
