Hi everyone-- I just found this site today, and am looking for information regarding mixing celexa and wellbutrin. I have been on Wellbutrin for 2 months now, doubled the dose to 300mg about 3 weeks ago. Today my doctor added Celexa to the mix. I am worried about taking an SSRI-- weight gain is a big fear. Also, as the only side effect I had on Wellbutrin was increased energy, I'm concerned about the many severe side effects of Celexa I am reading about. Does anyone have experience with this combination and any wisdom to share?
Thanks!

Why did your doc add Celexa? Was there a specific symptom he was trying to control that Wellbutrin was not helping with? I think this is a very common meds combination. Wellbutrin can sometimes exacerbate anxiety, and Celexa is supposed to be helpful for anxiety, so if you were having anxiety, maybe you will see some improvement in that. I have heard it be far more common for someone to be on Celexa (or another SSRI) and have Wellbutrin added to that to combat some of the SSRI's side effects, such as sexual problems or the zombie-like effect (not feeling things). I haven't heard that many people who do it the opposite way, like you.

I have not been on this combination, but I am on Wellbutrin and find it very helpful for ADHD-like symptoms.

Celexa is supposed to be a weight-neutral anti-depressant.

Thanks so much for your response! She added Celexa to the Wellbutrin because it had seemed to be working a little for a month or so, and then I just crashed again last week. The depression seemed to be worsening, so she wanted to try a combination to see if that helps. I've always had a tendency toward minor bouts of depression, but I've been depressed for well over a year solid now, but didnt seek any help until 2 mos ago. This is very scary and I feel like I dont know the person I've become. So, I am hoping the meds and weekly counseling will get me going in the direction of my old self again. Or maybe a new and improved self someday...

I hope you feel better too and the Celexa is helpful. What is your Wellbutrin dose? They say "therapeutic dose" for Wellbutrin is 300 mg. I did take that much at one time but now take only 150. In general the Celexa does not work as quickly as Wellbutrin and it may take several weeks to see an improvement. Hang in there! I'm really glad to hear you are doing counseling as well. I have found it so helpful.

Thank you! My dose of Wellbutrin is 300 mg. I am LOVING going to my therapist. I wish I could afford twice a week, but my insurance doesn't cover ANY of it, so once a week is all I can do.

I don't have any experience w/ the WB and Celexa combo. But I am familiar with WB and the newer version of Celexa (Lexapro) The Wellbutrin works on dopamine and norepinephrine. Celexa works on serotonin. So your doctor probably thought that you needed a little help with depression symptoms that weren't being addressed by the WB. Celexa does have some side effects that can be bothersome. BUT Wellbutrin is sometimes prescribed to counter the side effects of AD's. Like the Celexa. So you may not have any problems.

I was reading on the Wellbutrin site that the combination of Wellbutrin and Celexa is proven to be more helpful for depression than Wellbutrin alone.

I hope you feel better soon

I'm actually taking the combination now. I've been on celexa for almost a year now and my Pdoc just added WB last week. haven't had a chance to feel it out yet.

Reading your comments are real life for me. I have been struggling with depression to some degree for years. Anxiety since I was 15. This past year I have been to hell and back. I thought I had conquered it but I was wrong. My dr put me on Wellbutrin 6 weeks ago and I haven't really felt it working. So she has also added Celexa to it. I will start both tonight and see what happens. I am just hoping for it to work soon because I want my life back.
