I have been on Lithium 450 mg. at bedtime since last Thursday. I also started taking all of my Effexor XR 300 mg at one time in the morning. For 3 days I cut
my Topamax from 400 mg a day to 200 mg a day. Now I am on Topamax 100 mg a day for 30 days then off.
Since starting the Lithium & changing how I take the Effexor XR, I am suicidally
depressed & not as anxious(I haven't gone or done anything though since making these changes). I feel very detached, not connected to the situations around me. What I am wondering is this how Lithium normally makes you feel?

Thank you

Hey aern01, I'm on 900mg of Lithium and haven't ever felt detached or anything like that. Have you talked to your doctor about it?

Hi Blue_Bird,
Since I just started the Lithium on Thursday of last week,I haven't talked to my
pdoc. I was already feeling somewhat disconnected before starting the Lithium.
I haven't felt much genuine emotion until I got mad at my dog & since then I
don't feel so disconnected, but I don't know if I feel "right". I see my therapist
today & I am going to discuss it w/ him. I did find out that the Lithium makes
the tremors & heart rate increases I get w/ my Asthma meds much worse.
Thanks for your input. If you check back,I'll update after I see my therapist later
today.
Hugs from:

I can say that 450 mg is a really low dosage of Lithium, though coupled with other drugs might have some effect vs only being taken on its own. I point out the low dosage (generally 900-1800 is in the therapeutic range) to ask if it's definitely the Lithium. It is so hard to tell, I know. With Lithium and other psychotropic drugs initial side effects can go away, part of why people titrate up slowly and though it's painful as long as the side effects are overwhelming sometimes doctors will ask patients to stick with the drug a little longer to see if they go away. Incidentally, I'm on 1500 of Lithium (+ 125 of Lamictal, 300 of Triletpal and 10 of Adderall) and I don't feel disconnected.

Sorry to hear! I felt detached and depressed on Topamax as well. They call it dopamax because people feel stupid on it, especially on high doses. I love Lamictal, Latuda and Lexapro at high doses-they help with depression and mania! Best of luck!!
Thanks for this!

Hi Blue_Bird & Every One Else that has posted in this thread,
I am still feeling empty & disconnected. Saw my therapist yesterday now. He reminded me that I was feeling somewhat disconnected before starting the Lithium. I totally isolated for 4 days(except for talking with my Mom who I live w/. He wants to see if things get better w/ me resuming my normal schedule of activities. I started that tonight by going to my weekly Bible study. My pdoc is out of the office this week, but still reachable by phone so my therapist is going
to try & get in touch w/ ?him to ask about the Lithium. That's all for now. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Glad you were able to discuss it with your therapist, hopefully you're pdoc will be able to figure out what's going on whether it's that or another medication or unrelated to medication. I hope you start to feel better soon

Hi Aern, I'm on 650mg Lithium ( started on 400mg about 6 weeks ago ) and 150mg Efexor.
I haven't had that feeling of being disconnected either.
I was very very Tired for the first few weeks, but that seems to be passing now. Really my only issue is that horrible taste in my mouth.
I really hope you get some answers, sometimes the unexpected changes from the meds are enough to make us spiral downwards

One last thought. Ever since I started on a low dosage of Lithium and titrated up I always split my dose between morning and night. This is something to consider trying. I personally take more in the morning than night because I take a high enough dose (1500mg) that it makes me quite thirsty and consequently need to urinate frequently (more problematic at night).
Thanks for this!
