I recently got prescribed Fluoxetine and I was just wondering what I should expect, and how quickly did it take to work?

I've been on Fluoxetine for a couple of months now at 20mg. We are about to take it to 40mg. My depression hasn't lifted enough yet. I can't say I've noticed any side effects yet.

I've been on Prozac for almost a month(20mg for 2 weeks, 30 for 2 weeks. Will be at 40mg next week there on after), and the side effects I have gotten are dry mouth/throat, dizziness(only for the first week and a half) and decreased appetite.

I have noticed a big difference already in me. My head is so much more clearer and my outlook on life is way more positive. I also have more self control.

But for my OCD rituals, I haven't noticed a difference, I'm not to sure if the drug can help with that or it's something I will have to lean to overcome myself and with help.

Been on it since 1991; initially amazing, now stabilizing. If it works for you, you will know. If not, there are other meds to try. Everyone responds a bit differently. Read up on effects and potential side effects...I experienced mood improvement, better energy, and a better ability to complete projects, also less anxiety.

Took me years ago 12 weeks for it to work but I was in a pretty bad way. When it finally kicked in it was brilliant .

Prozac helped keep me out of depression for a couple of decades. For some reason, my former psychiatrist had me stop it, and within a couple of months I was in a serious depression. I just ramped up to 40 mg a couple of weeks ago and am hoping it will have the same effect as before. I had a couple really good days in a row mood-wise earlier this week. Today is different for some reason (feeling more low). I don't experience any side effects either.

It don't work for me at all now, I tried again after a long break and it made me so ill that it now on my notes never to be scripted again, I blame the generic, it was real Prozac that made me well all those years ago

I had terrible side effects and couldn't stay on it for more than a week. However, my side effects were of the "rare and serious" type.

I've been on it for months. I'm up to 60mg with some benefit and no side effects.

It didn't really work for my depression at all, but made me hungry and "flat". Hope it works better for you!

My ex-wife has been on it since 92. Same thing, at first it worked, but now she is still depressive, just not as bad.

Prozac has a bad reputation amongst the anti-depressants because of having a suicidal tendency. May be it doesn't go for everyone but you should watch out for the risks & consult with your doctor about it. All the very best. May you get better soon.

I switched to Prozac from escitalopram in September 2013 after the latter stopped working and I started having severe problems with anxiety. No side-effects, and I think that the Prozac lifted my lows somewhat. Since then, I've been diagnosed with bipolar 2, and my psychiatrist is slowly tapering me off. Also, I can't discern how much of my "stabilization" is due to the Prozac, and how much to attribute to Trileptal.

Everyone's case is different, and you'll have to wait and see what Prozac does for you. If you have any questions, it might be a good idea to ask your doctor/psychiatrist, as he/she might have a better idea to discern what specific things *you* ought to expect (based on your physiological and medical record). In general, SSRIs take ~2-3 months to have an effect.

Good luck.

I'm on Prozac. I started on 20mg and it seemed to work for awhile and then quit. I was just raised to 40 mg and am feeling better for the time being. I'm not having any side effect, except possibly a little sleepiness.

I take 40mg Fluoxetine (and 60mg during PMS) and I find it makes me feel so flat/unmotivated and tired. I take Adderall with it which helps, but the then the Prozac seems to counteract the help with focus I get from Adderall. I lowered recently myself to 20mg (and 40 at PMS) and it is less effective but still better than nothing.

I stay on the Prozac because it helps with my irritability/anxiety and keeps anger under control. Sometimes it can make depression worse. I'm curious about trying the brand name rather than the generic since I know it is true that some generics just don't work as well. Also, it is a miracle at PMS. I previously took Lamictal and my pdoc prescribed Prozac as an add on for PMS only. I noticed it work immediately, it was unbelievable. I stopped the Lamictal and take just the Prozac and Adderall now.

Wow, it's interesting reading everyone's experiences with Prozac. I'm on my fourth week on the generic version of Prozac (hopefully, it's not as bad as people say generic drugs are as here in Canada, by law they have to give you the generic drug unless you specify because it's cheaper) and it's been great. However, it makes me sleepy and tired (I yawn A LOT) which is why I take it at night. It also wakes me up in the middle of the night and I think it's taken a huge toll on my concentration. I'm up to 30mg now but I had these side effects since 10mg. The benefits are great. I'm way less anxious and depressed- in fact I was able to study for exams and write my exams without any anxiety or panic! I can feel sad without feeling depressed (that's a big deal for me) and I'm able to look at things more positively and openly because I'm in a better mood. It's also helped with my anger and irritation.

THE GENERIC is good , you started on it so that is better, its when years ago people had to swap from the real Prozac to the generic is caused a few problems but you will be fine. The tiredness is normal at the start, its you body adjusting and slowing from being uptight for so long. I only took 20mg and I worked fine so maybe don't go to high if for depression.
Thanks for this!
