Would Zopiclone a year out of date be toxic? Or just less effective?

Definitely less effective. Google would be able to tell you if it would hurt you. Why are you taking expired medication?

Check out this website about it:

Imovane (zopiclone) Drug / Medicine Information

It says it just won't work as well. It does not say it would be toxic. I'd talk to a doctor if you're super concerned.

Thanks for replying. I have never taken it before - a doctor gave it to me a long time ago and I kept it should I ever be desperate and not sleeping, which is now. Googled it, found nothing concrete, hence shooting a question here...

Yes I saw that site already, wasn't clear enough I felt. But thank you!

Ordinarily I would agree, but I'm in need and my standards are slipping! Thank you for replying.

Undecided whether to risk it or not. Ugh, I just want sleep!

You could probably call a pharmacy and ask to speak with a pharmacist. They'll be able to tell you whether it is safe.
It's probably just less potent now so it won't work as well as it would have before it expired.

Unfortunately the FDA requires an expiration date of one year. It's unfortunate because you really don't know how long it is good for. So it is good for one year or more unless the expire date is less then a year. Probably it just gets weaker over time. Note that your pill bottle always has an expire date of one year but the pils have been sitting on the pharmacy shelf for an undetermined amount of time. And there is transit and storage and manufacturing... You get the idea The pharmacist's bottle may have a more accurate expire date.
