Hello. I was wondering if anyone else has had symptoms from risperdal that I have. I started taking risperdal about 8 months ago, and it works really well for my schizoaffective disorder. But a few weeks ago I started lactating. I mean, just a few drops when squeezed, but still. So my OBGYN sent me for some blood work and it turns out I have an elevated level of prolactin, the hormone involved with breast feeding and breast changes. I know risperdal can cause high prolactin levels, and lactation.
Today I got the blood results back and the nurse said because of my high prolactin, the doctor is ordering an MRI of my brain to scan for pituitary tumors (adenomas) that might be affecting my prolactin levels. I asked her if some medications could cause prolactin increase, and she said no, not to this extent. But I never asked about risperdal specifically. But she said medications do NOT cause it to be THIS high. So what are the odds of having a med that causes increased prolactin, PLUS a pituitary adenoma? Very slim I am guessing. It has to be the risperdal right? It can't be a tumor.

Risperdal can definitely cause high prolactin levels and lactation. I started lactating within a month of being on a really low dose .5 mg daily. It also seriously screwed up my period.
It's most likely the med. splitimage |

It was high enough that the nurse said medication would not make "this extreme." So maybe she meant that it isn't my medication because it's so high that it has to be a tumor? I want to call Dr. Voth tomorrow to clarify this. I want to know what my level is.

If the nurse didn't know risperdal specifically she may have jumped to conclusions.
I found out i "may have" a microadenoma on my pituitary gland as well, and this was only discovered when I talked to my doc that I wanted another medical work up as I suspected perhaps something else was going on. Now I just get MRIs annually to check on it as some tumours are active in the sense that they mess with your hormones etc. but if they r unaware u r on risperdal I'd for sure tell them as that's very important for them to know. Hope u find some answers. I know it's scary. I still don't believe I have a tumour or " May have" bc it's so small it was impossible to even measure apparently.... |

Risperdal gave me high Prolactin levels. I was sent to a endocrinologist. I was not lactating. But did enough research to know this med caused it. They werre all prepared to spend a lot of money trying to figure this out. The last time I saw him, I asked him if it could be the Risperdal. He looked it up and said yes. I was switched to something else and that was the end of it.

I called the nurse and she said my level was 87.4. That is not actually extremely high I don't think so I think it is the risperdal. Does anyone know if you can just live with high prolactin levels or would my pdoc need to switch meds?
