As the title says, I'm switching from 10 mg/day Prozac to 10 mg/day Lexapro without any break in between, meaning consecutive days. Has anyone had any experience with this, and if so what was it and your circumstances surrounding the change, if you don't mind sharing?
As I side note I've been on Pozac 10 mg for about 4 years straight. Would love ANY input!! Thanks in advance! J

4 years o.0.
I think it's ok since it's the lowest dose possible that can be sold of Prozac. I got switched from 10mg Lexapro to 20mg Prozac but I was only on the 10mg Lexapro for a few weeks. If your prescriber is a psychiatrist then I wouldn't worry much. Try calling a different psychiatrist locally for a second opinion because 4 years is a long time to build tolerance. |

I have always kept taking the first drug and tapered off of it while starting the second drug right away.

Since 10mg is the lowest dose of Prozac, it can not be tapered. It is OK to start Lexapro at 10mg, which can be increased later

If only on 10mg of Prozac , 5mg of Lexapro may be better, 10mg is at the very least 20mg of Prozac. Staight swap over no problem they are both ssri,s

You will be fine I guess. As has been said, 10mg is the lowest dose of Prozac. Lexapro 10mg is also low I guess.

I appreciate the responses. I'm now considering attempting to just stop the Prozac cold turkey, not begin anything else, and see how that goes. Ive read a lot about the long half life of it, as well as being on the lowest dose, and as mentioned I may hv even built up a tolerance where it is possibly doing nothing at this point.
Any further thoughts?

Why not start the Lexapro?

Most doctors will just exchange one for another to avoid the withdrawals from stopping an SSRI, even Prozac. It stays in your system longer so they don't hit you immediately.
It ispossible to taper at a dose lower than 10mg if your pdoc can give it to you in liquid form. My former psychiatrist did that for me 20 years ago the first time I took prozac. It took a lot longer to come off it, but there were zero withdrawals. Then you may have a chance to see how you feel without any meds in your system (as I doubt the dosages at this level have any therapeutic effect). It was about a 4 week process. |

Again thanks for responses so far. To answer Zinco, I was aware before posting here that 10 mg was the lowest dose of Prozac. I have been on it for about 7 years I think. Same dosage. I wondered at this point if I had built up a tolerance to it, being such a low dosage and the possibility it wasn't even having any therapeutic effect, , that I could just quit with no noticeable side effects.
I admittedly hv to say I am depressed, and not in a good place in life right now in a number of ways. However it has been that way for over a year, and in making efforts at change and hv no where to go but up. So I haven't changed my dosage this long, thought why not try to quit. Also moved to NY recently and am unemployed with no $ or health insurance or doc currently, And will be running out of the Prozac today. So that is another reason

I would be careful going cold turkey if you're already feeling depressed. Cold turkey on any medicine can cause pretty bad withdrawal symptoms. I don't think there is ever a "right time" to get off anti depressants but I do think it's best to do it when you're in a good place physically and emotionally.
It may be just fine but be careful. I've recently dealt with withdrawal symptoms and it was not fun at all! All the best! |

I appreciate the sentiment Changing. However as I stated, it's out of my hands in a manner. I don't have ANY means of getting any more meds at this time, and will be out today.
I posed the initial question of switching from Prozac to lexapro because a family member has about a months worth, maybe 2 depending on dosage change, that they aren't using any longer. Before anyone jumps on me, yes I know doing this on my own or taking others prescribed is not recommended. But in my situation, it was/is an option to weigh. Why I posed the question initially. Still open to comments? Thank you
