I'm taking an on-line pharmacology course that looks at psych meds and drugs of abuse, through my psych hospital. It's really hard but super interesting. As far as I know I'm the only consumer in the course, everyone else is in some way involved in addictions or mental health care.

Any way this week's assignment is dead simple for me. We have to describe a med, side effect and it's management. The assignment actually says to use a client as an example, but since my only client is me, I'm going with personal experience.

So I'm not sure which of my many meds or side effects it would be most fun to talk about. I'm trying to decide between the boring such as dizziness and nausea, to the more extreme such as sexual disfunction and lactation, then there's also increased photsensativity, and complete change in taste, or maybe I'll go for the good old hand tremors, since they're the most annoying.

I vote for the tremors! They are the only side effect of my med that others notice, especially at work.

I think the tremors are interesting too. I had them in my hands when I was taking a lot of Wellbutrin. What causes them?

My most interesting side effect was an extremely heightened sense of smell, and to a lesser extent increased sense of taste, when I took Buspar. This is a rare side effect but documented. I loved it! I did nothing to manage it. I just tried to take advantage of having super-human senses of smell and taste and enjoy it fully. I would take this drug only for this side effect if it were permitted.

Splitimage, what medication did you have a complete change in taste on? Did certain foods taste like other foods, or what?

I know the tremors are the most noticable side affects, but I am sensitive to the sun and bright lights as one of the side affects of my medications. I have to be real careful.

I don't know if my response is of any help as I've been on this med for only 2 weeks now, (and it being my first antidepressant ever prescribed to me).
I'm on Wellbutrin 120mg. 2x/day

I have tremors, too.

Anyway, side effects I've been feeling are a few, (not sure if they're normal, or not).
Clenching teeth.
Head feels like in a vise.
Ringing in ears.
Sweaty palms.
Pressure in chest.
Difference in breathing. Briefly holds breath, releases...repeats.
Headache on left temple.

All these symptoms fade then reappear all throughout the day. On and off, type of thing.

I have no idea what positive is supposed to come out of taking antidepressants. Hmm.

Sorry if this wasn't of any help...

Effexor - It was really wierd. Since I've been on Effexor I absolutely despise red wine, chocolate, and chilis, all foods I previously loved. Now I have cravings for citrus and caramel flavours, which I was never crazy about before.

Shangrala, I second the comment that you should maybe talk to your Dr. about the side effects if you haven't already. 2 weeks isn't long enough for the benefits of an Anti-D to kick in, but that's a lot of side effects that appear to not be going away.

I'm on a lot of different meds, and I've had pretty nasty side effects with starting each one or whenever I increased the dose, but generally most side effects only lasted a few days for me, except some which are permanent but that I can live with.

I decided for the assignment to give them the complete psych patient's take on psych meds. So did a chart listing each med I'm on, it's side effects, and how I manage them.

Then I talked about the hand tremors as being the most annoying, and that I wasn't sure what caused it - whether it was a specific med, or the combination of meds.

Parnate

If you don't stick to the diet you get hypertensive crisis. Remedy, avoid foods or if you have an attack take 100 mg thorazine/largatil right away.

Prazosin caused me to carry on conversations for so long I woke myself up at night from the noise.
