My wife has schiophrenia since 1990, and she takes zypyexa for it. Recently she has been having problems during the day only. If she has sugar in the morning for breakfast, 2 glasses of soda, 4 poudered donuts and she makes it through the day without an attack. When she has an attack she usually did not eat, then she comes home she eats and it will last for about 5 hours then she is okay again. I would like to know if this is something or I am just fooling myself. Could these symtoms be because the meds are causing her to be hypoglycemic at times which causes her to get paranoid at times.

Lurng,
I do not have any specific information on your wife's diagnosis, medication or knowledge about the possible connection to hypoglycemia. However, the way you describe the situation sounds like there is a connection. EJ |

It's probably a good idea to have periodic blood tests to track blood sugar and lipids for anyone taking an antipsychotic, especially zyprexa. Check with your doctor.

what is 'an attack'?
(i mean what does she do?) can you take her to a GP and get her blood sugar tested? because i guess first you would need to establish that she is getting hypoglycemic. if she was indeed then i guess it would be another issue as to whether it is the meds that are causing it... |

Interesting question. I don't know how it all fits together, but all those dynamics are all over the place in my family. Mom is hypoglycemic, and when her sugar got low everything stopped, no matter where we were or what we were doing. Migraines too, to throw in one more thing. She expressed her distress through physical symtoms, you could say. My brother is schizophrenic, and depression and anxiety affect almost all of us. I think that I have some of the hypoglycemia issues, and also recently took the MMPI and scored really high in the schizophrenia and paranoia scales. I'll have to see if I can find some of the patterns. Sorry I don't have any answers for you beyond "maybe," but thanks for giving me something to think about.

Zyprexa has a known connection with developing diabetes so you should check with her doc asap to get not only her blood glucose level checked but her insulin level as well.--Suzy
