If you split an extended released seroquel, it loses the extended release properties; thus, the warning not to split them.

If it says not to split them then you can't split them---they may be enteric coated or have an uneven distribution of the drug within the pill etc.

Seroquel xl IS prolonged release. If it was immediate release, it would be called seroquel IR. The coating is what allows it to release according to formulation. When you cut the pill, it will no longer work as designed.

SEROQUEL XL 50MG PROLONGED RELEASE TABLETS | Drugs.com

"Seroquel XL tablets are prolonged-release tablets designed to release quetiapine slowly and continuously over 24 hours to help provide steady blood levels of the medicine throughout the day. Seroquel XL tablets should be taken once a day without food, at least one hour before a meal. If you are taking Seroquel XL to treat a depressive episode or as a mood stabiliser for bipolar disorder, your daily tablet should be taken at bedtime. Seroquel XL tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, crushed or chewed, as this would damage the prolonged-release action.

Why do you say this? Thats what the XL means on any med. Or XR. Is the computer autocorrecting the med name?

With seroquel, xl means prolonged release, xr means extended released, ir means immediate release. I'm not sure if the OP doesn't understand what kind of seroquel he has? Maybe he was given misinformation? Not sure.
Thanks for this!

There is a misunderstanding. I live in Europe and there are two kinds of Seroquel.

1. Seroquel (quetiapine)- film-coated tablets. - SEROQUEL 200MG/TAB F.C.TAB BTx60 (BLIST 6x10)
2. Seroquel XR Prolonged-release tablet- prolonged-release tablets - SEROQUEL XR 200MG/TAB PR.TAB BTx30

In my case I use the film-coated tablets.

1. Seroquel (quetiapine) Patient Information Leaflet says: • Swallow your tablets whole with a drink of water.

2. Seroquel XL Prolonged-release tablet Patient Information Leaflet says: • Do not split, chew or crush the tablets.

Please advice

No, then I'm not misunderstanding. The XL is prolonged release which means the coating on it must stay intact for it to work correctly. You can only split the regular seroquel (without the xl or xr addition to name).

Both of the sources I provided above are from UK sources.
Thanks for this!

Lewy Body Dementia Association, Inc. - View topic - Getting pills down

Here is a posting where a person talked to a pharmacist about film-coating and said it was okay to cut a film-coated pill in half. Its just to hide the taste.
Thanks for this!

Not if it is in any way an extended or prolonged released med. Not all film coating is created equal (or actually what is inside the film coating).
Thanks for this!
