I was on Quetiapine 300mg and Mirtazapine 15 mg for months, but only started feeling more energised/cheerful when the Mirt was doubled to 30mg. Does anyone think I should taper down the Quet, which makes me sleer 10 hours and just stick to the Mirt - praps at 45 mg? Only had one serious mania in 2002, and I was stable for 11 years on zero meds till latest sudden downer 6 months back

wontsee60again, I would discuss your dosage levels with your doctor and pharmacist, as you have been on these meds for 15 months.

Probably the safest choice.

The lowest maintenance dose for bipolar is 400mg so you're already on the low side...I might give it a little longer before tapering off.

6 months actually but thanks for the reply. Just poss there might be Docs or MH workers on this forum. I'd have to discuss it with my doc for a changed Prescription - but would welcome any experiences ppl have. Thanks again

Thanks for your reply but I was completely stable from May 02 to Dec 13 with no meds at all. Wouldn't wish to take them more than another 6 months if possible. Thanks again and I'd welcolm any personal experiences..

I don't actually know for isolated mood disorders but for psychosis they want you stable with zero symptoms for 6 months before you even start tapering...then tapering takes another 6 months. I imagine it depends on how fast you cycle. I guess in my mind you just found a med combo that made you feel good again so yeah I'd give it a solid six months of feeling good before messing with the meds. But at the same time you can always go back up if things start feeling bad. Unfortunately I think meds are much more an art than a science and there basically isn't good literature on getting off of them.

Thanks for your further reply. I'll carry on as I am for another 4 or 5 months, and start tapering in the Autumn and hope to be off meds by next Easter

I'm on both meds. I'm palnning on decreasing the mirtazipine and hopefully going off it. I think Seroquel is more helpful for mixed-state bipolar...but of course, that's just me. You really have to speak w/ your p-doc and find out what works best for you. It's frustrating. I wish we all reacted the same way to meds.
