Hi

I have trouble sleeping and MDD. I am now on 200mg of Trazodone for sleep and it is giving me some very unwanted side effects. It is helping me sleep on the 200mg. Anything less didn't work. I am having tiredness during the day where I walk into walls and feel unsteady for a couple hours in the morning and when I wake up I have nasal congestion and I sneeze a lot.

I was wondering if anyone has tried Remeron for both sleep and depression and what is it like?

Thanks so much.

I had hangover effects of daytime tiredness, fatigue. Wasn't much help to be adding that to what was going on. I have been taking Gabapentin and it works very well for me. I get to sleep, stay asleep, and wake up refreshed. I also am using a CPAP for sleep apnea which prevented me from getting good sleep.

Keep talking to your doctors and let them know what is going on.
Thanks for this!

Hey Echoes

I was on gabapentin for over 5 years for fibromyalgia. My highest dose was 1800mg. It stopped working for me as far as pain and it never helped my insomnia. The sleep apnea you have is surely a complicating factor for your sleep but I am glad the gabapentin helps. So sorry you have to be on CPAP. I have great difficulty in initiating sleep and staying asleep. So I look at major meds to knock me out.

Thanks for your support and your reply!!

I have taken Remeron 30 mg for a couple of years and it has worked great. 15 mg will work usually too. Most common problem is weight gain but I have not had that or any other side effects. Not sure if it helps my depression but for sleep it is great. I have taken Trazadone and it knocked me out to quick and I got the hangover effect in the morning.

Remeron (mirtazapine) was the first anti-depressant that I was prescribed.

For me it was worse than useless (bad suicidal ideation).

However, it works well for other members of my mood disorders therapy group.
Thanks for this!

Remeron was good for me for a long time. It helped me sleep and worked on the depression for a while. But...I gained a lot of weight on it and after a while it started to not work for the depression so I stopped.
Thanks for this!

Remeron is quite commonly used for sleep these days. Much safer than ambien or benzos.

Do you also have depression like I do? How was the next day feeling when you first started taking it?

I do have severe chronic depression. I take Fetzima and Lamictal for that. Remeron was solely for sleep. I didn't ever notice much of an antidepressant effect with it. Years ago I tried it for depression and it didn't work.

When I first stated I got a solid 4 or 5 hours then started waking up. I know the Effexor I was on was causing the sleep disturbance. Fetzima is not as bad. The Remeron has allowed me to get enough of the type of sleep I need to feel rested in the morning. I sleep very well now.

Hi-

I tried Trazadone for sleep...first dose caused the WORST headache I ever had in my life, and I get terrible migraines. So after one dose, I stopped.

I was on Remeron about 10 yrs ago for depression.....I did gain weight and was so thirtsy! I would stand by the sink & drink 36 ounces of water at a time...anticholinergic side effects. Since I have body dysmorphia, came off of that med after a month or so....I do not remember if it helped my depression or not. I thnk everyone is different, so you could give it a try!
I hope it works for you!

I am a little afraid of increased appetite and weight gain and the anticholinergic effects but it can't be worse than doxepin (tricyclic) I HOPE!

Thanks so much!

I have been on Remeron since 2005 and it was great once it was paired with Effexor in 2007. The big down side is the fatigue hangovers and huge weight gain. What I have found is that medication seems to work or not - it is best just to give it a try and see I know a new drug is scary - I recently (2 weeks ago) switched from Remeron to Abilify - Anxiety went a little high and I am still on the fence about if it is working. Good luck, and I hope you get all the good and the bad skips you - or is at least a fair trade off. Let us know how it goes

I finally saw my pdoc and asked to try remeron for sleep. I started taking 15 mg 4 days ago and I am getting the sleep I was wishing for. Like others I have read about, I too am having vivid strange dreams but the sleep benefit outweighs them. I was a zombie the first 2 days but held in there. I now get sleepy during the day but it isn't all day.

I also have MDD and I am not really looking for a big antidepressant effect on the 15 mg as much as the help to get to sleep. I have noticed today on the 4th day that my emotions are a bit out of whack. I am touchy and feel like I can get angry very easily. I also feel some sadness. I wasn't having these symptoms before. I also wasn't on any antidepressant before either. I was feeling slightly depressed before but now it feels very affective (more emotional). I am going to try and hang in there. I called my pdoc's office to let them know. I think I need another antidepressant to go along with the remeron. I also have ADHD and that complicates things a bit.

ADHD
MDD
GAD

I couldn't tolerate 10 mg Adderall XR (bad headaches), increased HR and BP too high. So I d/c'd it. I let my pdoc's office know.

current psychtropic meds:

Clonazepam 1mg BID
Mirtazapine 15 mg

Still no help for the ADHD yet. Hopefully soon.
