I'm diagnosed with Bipolar 2 and have been on Depakote for at least a year and a half. It's been working rather well for my situation though recently I've been given the bad news of a manufacturer's backup in availability. I've had to switch over to the basic form of it; Valproic Acid. Unfortunately, it's totally rough on my stomach and there's the option of Depakote ER but without insurance I'm unable to afford it. Just wondering if anyone else is currently in this situation and how they're feeling with taking the alternative. Thanks!

Hi, Millicent_daily, and welcome to Psych Central! I was on depakote years ago. Wow, I've never heard of a manufacturer back-up. Is it possible for you to eat something before taking the depakote? That might help until the drug is available again.
Thanks for this!

I'd find out who manufactures the Depakote you need and check their website (or links on this forum) to see if they have a low-cost or free Depakote. Seroquel is an insanely expensive medication, but I used to get it 100% FREE from AstraZeneca.
Thanks for this!

Thanks to both of you. I was trying online but I was told to be wary of where the meds came from. Guess I'll just do some extra research and see what turns up. Thanks!!

I don't think the drug companies will give it free once it goes generic. Depakote has to be generic it has been out so long. And I think you do have to be careful which lab makes it. It is up to the pharmacy to buy from a good lab.

I am currently on the generic Depakote ER and it seems to be working well. The cost is substantially less than the brand name med.
