Hello, has anyone experienced weight gain from wellbutrin, Topamax or trazadone? I've tried Cymbalta, Effexor and Prozac and stopped taking them because I felt worse and gained weight. My depression and social withdrawal are back and now its affecting my work. Why do I hate people? Done with therapy so please any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Hmm, not sure what to suggest.
You said you have tried therapy. Does that include CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)?

Neither Wellbutrin nor Topomax caused weight gain for me. Wellbutrin didn't have any side effects at all and that's rare for me because I tend to have side effects on everything. Topomax gave me gastrointestinal upset that wouldn't stop but no weight gain.

Trazodone is supposed to be very good to help with sleep, I couldn't take it because of side effects.

Good luck

Wellbutrin is usually known to not cause weight gain/weight netural. Topomax, which is used for migrains has the reputation of making people lose weight. Which unfortunately has caused many people to try to get it scripted off label for specifically that reason.

Trazodone has been shown to cause weight gain in a realtivley small percentage of people.Trazodone causes weight gain (over 6 kg) in greater than 2% but less than 10% of patients with chronic use at therapeutic doses.

Benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepine and melatonergic hypnotics, doxepin, and trazodone are weight neutral

As usual talk to your doctor, psychiatrist and health care team about all of this!

I used Topamax for five years with no weight change. After the second year I was aware of a mild itching that got a bit worse from then on--even though the dose remained the same. Reducing it left the itch but took away the beneficial effects. At five yrs I was itching all over all the time and felt what seemed like little, very hot pokers sticking about two inches in me. That's when I decided there was no living with it any more. Unfortunately, all mood stabilizing meds give me side effects that are unpleasant.

Best wishes & good luck, Ladybug75. And welcome to PsychCentral.

topiramate was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in combination with phentermine for weight loss.

I would think all three of those would be very low risk for weight gain.

Wellbutrin only helped me quit smoking. Prozac gave me energy and didn't increase my appetite. I knew a morbidly obese man who was given prozac for depression and weight loss. I am now losing weight on topamax. It seems like a lot of meds are having an opposite effect on you but there are many AD available.

Haha. I'm not laughing at you at all. But I did this exact same thing and typed a big reply then realized it was under the wrong thread. Facebook makes me ill. Just remember 90% of it is BS. No one updates their status to house foreclosure, spouse had affairs, I gained a boatload of weight or I suck at my career. I logged out of FB on my phone and am considering just deleting my account. I don't really like all those people being able to look at my pics.

I get emails from FB telling me I haven't been on recently and have 27 messages or something waiting. I'm with you guys, Mrs. Mania & thickntired--social media in general is not for some of us, just a button-push waiting to happen.
And of course, the more of our real life is on the internet, the more open we are to ID theft, stalking, etc.
I want to delete my FB account, by some of the old friends I'd lost track of, who found me there, wouldn't understand ...
Wish I didn't care.

I know about the old friends. I'm having problems in my marriage and if we divorce I have 50 in - laws in Ireland on my FB friends. I also quit AA on the guise that I'd come back but not feeling it and lot's of AA FB friends lol. My T said tons of her clients lament about FB and social media. I used to tell everyone happy birthday then on my bd 2 ppl posted on my wall so I was like forget this.

FWIW, I lost 13 lbs in three months on Wellbutrin, but it didn't completely get rid of my depressive symptoms so I ended up adding a second AD. Of course everyone is different and will respond differently to meds....

I wish Fetzima caused weight loss. I kinda hoped it would but no such luck. I don't think I have ever really gained on any meds. I am lucky with side effects though.
