Just been prescribed this by my doctor. Anyone any experience of it ? I've tried most types of a/d, SSRI's, tricyclics and remeron over the years. I don't know much about this one though. I'm hoping for good sleep, no weight gain and no appetite increase. Thanks !

You have to remember that this is MY experience only. Most people seem to do fine on Trazadone for their insomnia.

I only took one pill, and dumped the remaining bottle....it was that much of a nightmare for me.

I took the pill, and then sat on the couch to read for an hour because my pdoc said it would take about 60 minutes to hit. Well, how about 10 minutes??? I could hardly speak because my tongue was thick and clumsy, and it took all I could do to lift my legs off the couch and get into bed. It knocked me for a zinger! I thought this was going to be great!!! Finally, some SLEEP!!!

Shortly after laying down, my nose closed completely up. I could only breathe through my mouth....which constantly was drying out my tongue, mouth, and throat. I had to keep reaching for water or I couldn't swallow, plus I was all dopey to begin with. Of course I couldn't sleep because then I couldn't breathe at all! It took about 5 hours for my nose to open up again, and then I was hit with a migraine. What a wonderful experience. And Trazadone is used to treat migraines, but I think it was just that I was stuffed up for so long that caused the migraine to come.

I finally fell alseep, exhausted, and woke up with the migraine STILL. I crawled over to the couch, and spent the entire day in agony laying on the couch. I couldn't even take care of my kids...they had to get themselves off to school by themselves. I just couldn't move because I was in so much pain.

Then, the following day after that, I dumped every last Trazadone. And the pdoc did tell me later that it COULD cause a person's nose to close up like that.

If it hadn't been for my nose (which brought on the migraine, I'm sure), then I think this probably would have been a good sleep med. I've only heard of one other person who's had the nose congestion like I had. I think it's a pretty rare side effect.

Maybe try half a pill and see how it goes. I've really only heard good things about it for a sleeping aid (except for myself and this one other oddball. LOL).

Godd luck!

God bless,
Sandy

I used trazodone many years ago. I was prescribed prozac and trazodone. I took it at night for sleep, it was wonderful.

yes, Traz. will help with sleep, although it was one of the first anti-depressants ever made (and arguably the worst based on effectiveness), just about the only use it has today is a sleep aid...it did not cause any weight gain for me

Thanks for your comments, I had one tablet last night and had a great night's sleep, I did feel very dizzy after about 40 mins, I can imagine this being a problem if the tablets were taken in the day time. I'm on a 100 mg per day to build up to 200mg after 1 week. My doctor did however prescribe them for depression rather than sleep (though he realises I do have sleep problems) I don't feel groggy today either..
Sandy, sorry you had such a bad exerience with Trazodone, luckily I don't suffer migraine, that sounded awful though. I must admit I was surprised when I found out they were one of the 'older' drugs I've taken lots of different a/d's over the years but this is the first time I've had this one ! Trazodone ?

I, too, had a wonderful experience with Traz. It was primarily to knock me out at night, and it did just that. Just make sure you have all your business taken care of before you take it! Best of luck!
