Wellbutrin/Wellbutrin XL generics & odor

Has anyone else gotten scripts filled with the generics for Wellbutrin or Wellbutrin XL and the meds have had a funky smell, sometimes vinegary and sometimes a smell I just cannot describe but it is awful, overwhelming when opening the container?

The pharmacists says this is normal but I am doubting it especially given the my recent decline into depression despite being med compliant, and increasing the dose per doc, since getting these new generics that the pharmacy has switched to now. I have never had a problem with generics before as have been on it for years but I am considering asking the doc to go back to the brand name to see if there is a difference. I am also having a hard time finding research on this or even comments other than "sometimes the generics have a smell" but doesn't say if it safe; like with acetaminophen in Tylenol or Excedrin, if it smells like vinegar, it is definitely not safe. Nothing like this is indicated about generic Wellbutrin/XL's smell.

Anyone else noticed this with the generic? What are your thoughts?

BTW the FDA got nailed for not using the proper protocol. Wellbutrin XL helps my depression without increasing the regular Wellbutrin anxiety levels. Problem being to much N.E. in the synapse to quick. If you have anxiety with co-morbid depression. Talk to your doc!
I have used both-regular release in a bind and it is polar opposites, night and day!

I have Generic XL Wellbutrin it doesn't have any smell at all. I know that doesn't help but something to compare to maybe?

Yup. I've had that happen.

You should try a different pharmacy if you can't get brand name. Then you may at least get a different "brand" of generic. I'm not on Welbutrin but I'm on the brand name of anti depressants. There's a difference from one generic to another.

My generic does not smell bad.

Mine are generic & sometimes they smell much stronger than other times. I leave the bottle open so it will go away.

I don't notice any smell. The only weird thing that I notice is that on one of the generic brands my lips taste funny when I first take my pill. lol I don't know why.

I've taken several different generics (different manufacturers at the same pharmacy) and haven't noticed this. However, I'm a smoker so my sense of smell could interfere with that.

I took them in to my doc and back to pharmacy to talk to them. Given my symptoms and that even increasing it, there is no effect, in the meantime, my doc is calling in a script for the brand name to see if there is a difference. It took a couple of days to get a prior authorization to get the brand name; starting the new script today, so we will see if there is a difference. Just a note, these do not smell bad but smell like they always have for years. Perhaps the other was a bad batch, or a problem manufacturer, don't know.

I have had the same issue with my Wellbutrin XL - it's too bad we can't find any information on this - it almost makes me gag when I tried to take my does. This is the first time. I don't know if it makes a difference but this particular refill was from a mail-order pharmacy thru my insurance. I need to call them and see if this is unique to this brand or something -
so just know that you are not the only one smelling this horrible smell.
