I was prescribed 1mg Xanax up to 2x daily as needed, but over time I've noticed that I rarely need it anymore because my anxiety has become more like GAD and I've had less panic attacks. I also noticed that after I'd take Xanax I would be depressed the day after.

So, I got switched to Klonopin .5mg 2x daily to manage general anxiety symptoms. I like it a lot! It doesn't make me feel like I'm on a medication, it's totally smooth. I simply go from anxious to not anxious, and that's it. Sometimes it will make me drowsy but it's not as bad as Xanax.

My question is, am I legally allowed to continue taking the Xanax that I have left over as needed for when I have panic attacks? Because I still do need it sometimes, just very rarely.

The reason I'm asking about the legality of it is because I'll have a pre-employment drug test soon, and if they see both medications in my system I want to know if it will be a problem.

They are both benzodiazepines. Usually drug screens don't get more specific than that.

I know how drug screens work, it's just that if they use the type of drug test that shows the specific chemical that shows up in your urine, and they see both, will that be a problem for me?

hi, i'm not sure how it works legally in your country but maybe going back to the doctor and getting a new script would be wise if you are concerned about how it might impact work

I don't want to belabor the point but I think Yoda is right. It would take a very complex test to differentiate Xanax and clonazepam. But really, you do have the Xanax and the bottle has your name on it so taking it isn't illegal.

You legally have prescriptions for both. It shouldn't be an issue. And like the other posters said, it's a very expensive, complex test to differentiate Xanax from klonopin. Most employers aren't going to be willing to pay for that.
