I have taken Effexor, Celexa and Lexapro in the past. They all worked pretty well for the depression, but the side effects were bothersome. I would sleep ALL the time, and was still always tired and dizzy. I also had really intense dreams. I was hoping to never need meds again, but I have been severely suicidal since the end of my 6.5 year relationship, so I'm trying it again. This time my Dr. has recommended Nortriptyline, a tricyclic, and one of the older types of anti-depressants, because she thinks maybe the side effects will not be as severe. Has anyone had experience with this medication?

I took it years back....it did not help my depression, but I did not have any side effects. Maybe, it will work for you--we are all different. I hope it does work for you because its tough to find a med that does not have side effects.

I haven't tried that particular tricyclic, but have been on others (before getting dx of bp 1). I always have very vivid dreams when I start a new med. Then they subside & I can't rememebr any dreams at all. For the side effect of excessive daytime sleepiness that I have on my meds I take Provigil & Concerta. They really help. I get through the day without any loss of energy & can still sleep at night, but I take Trazodone & klonopin at night Sleeping enough is important to me cuz I tend to cycle when I go a few days without about 6 hours of sleep. Good luck on finding the right meds for you .--Suzy
