I'm on day 3 of Lexapro 5mg for 5 days and then up to 10 mg. I have a bad headache, no appetite, and slept until 1pm today. I'm hopeful this new drug will bring me out of my anxiety/depression. I also take Lamictal. I've tried many other drugs...Seroquel, Saphris, Abilify, and couldn't function with horrible side effects. I'd like to hear anyone's experiences on Lexapro please. I am BP2 diagnosed.

Lexapro did nothing for my depression. At all. But I had no side effects either. I replied to your other message, but has your physician mentioned Latuda as an option at all? Just curious.

Thanks for responding. My Doc did consider Latuda. I think because it is is a same class of drugs as the others that I had a really rough time with, that there is a big concern that I would go thru a similiar experience. I'm feeling better on the Lexapro. So sleepy though. I'm hoping this will subside. The other drug my Dr. Thought might be an option is Tegretol. Do you know anything about it? Thanks so much.

Yes, Latuda is in the same class as abilify etc. Tegretol is kind of a random choice, but whatever. It's a seizure med, used off label for bipolar disorder, mechanism of action in bipolar disorder is completely unknown. Side effects are pretty common for this class - dizziness, drowsiness, unsteadiness etc. It's fairly well tolerated and seems to help a lot of people.
Glad the Lexapro is helping, sounds like tegretol may be a good choice for you if it doesn't continue to improve. Good luck.

Lexapro didn't do much for me, but when I took it, the side effects did take about 2 weeks to level off. I had severe headaches, nausea, dizziness, and it totally screwed with my sleep. It made me sleepy after first taking it, then about 2 to 3 hours later, I was wide awake and kinda bouncing off the walls.

It's amazing how different our brains are with tolerating all these meds. I was finally diagnosed bipolar 7 months ago after 20 years of a unipolar depressive diagnosis. I never recognized the hypo mania symptoms or the cyclical seasonal depressions as bipolar. Nor did my many Drs over those many years.

What I never expected though, was this frustrating and scary journey of taking med after med trying to find one my body could tolerate. my family and friends saw me go thru a very bad time on the anti-psychotic meds. I could barely function and experienced my first true hyper manic state of my life. I even had the DNA test done but it didn't prove to be as helpful as we'd hoped it would be. I continue every day to try to be hopeful that I can manage this illness, and feel a sense of calm within me. I feel better than I did a week ago so I'm headed in the right direction. Thanks for your support.

I took Lexapro 20mg for a while, besides really really really messing with my moods I had a lot of physical stomach/digestive side effects from it. Those side effects did go away after about a month. I recommend drinking some milk or eating cheese when taking it. This should help with the stomach issues some.

Lexapro really helped with anxiety, but it made me too lethargic and seemed to worsen my depression so I stopped taking it after a few months. Strangely, the anxiety hasn't returned as intensely, so I think I benefitted in the long run.

I had a really intense reaction in the first 5 days. I would stare, unmoved and lacking in energy, for hours on end at nothing and would fall asleep and wake up in the same position. I was completely out of it for the first 5 days. I've been on it a year now and can easily say I have no side effects, no insomnia etc. The side effects I had only lasted less than a week.

I have been on Lexapro for about 10 weeks now. No side effects, but it isn't doing anything for my depression. So I'll quit this and try an other medication for depression.
