I literally cannot afford my medications. I have a job, but I Just got it and don't have a paycheck yet and won't have enough for the meds for many weeks because I have other bills, too. No one can lend me money, I have no insurance, no credit cards.. and I need to buy Effexor, Wellbutrin, and Sonata within the next four days (when my Effexor now runs out). Is there any way that this is possible? I'm thinking no, so I'm going to just need to go off Effexor out of nowhere, which I've heard is bad to do.. but what choice do I have?

I know there are programs to get free meds. In fact, I get my Effexor free, but the company mails it to my doctor at school in New Mexico, but I am at home in Tennessee, and he says he can't mail me the Effexor, so until I go back to school, what can I do? Are there any sort of programs where I can get it free or reduced price if I'm far away from my doctor?

Hi there,

My best advice would be to call the local department of health and find out if there are clinics in your area that work on a sliding scale. My nephew is on Paxil and he was going to a clinic where he paid a couple bucks for the visit and then they got him his medications for free.

Yeah, I go to a place here for therapy that does a sliding scale, but they said they don't want to switch me to a psychologist here for meds, so I need to stick with mine at school, but maybe I'll call them now and see if I can get my prescription filled there cheaper anyway.. thanks.

Find out if there is a free clinic in your area as they sometimes have a pharmacy in conjunction.

Also for future help the medication manufacturers will sometimes have a discount plan for their medications. You have to fit into certain financial guidelines but if you do you can possibly get your meds for free or discounted.

If you have a church affiliation - you maybe able to speak to the church leader. Being in property management, I have seen many checks from church's to pay rent...

Just another thought...

you need a doctor close by. my state has a free drug program but i have to go to a state clinic and the service is surprising good.

even if you could talk to someone in ER, you might be able to get enough meds to tide you over. if you have any prozac on hand or can borrow some from a friend, it will help you with not having the effexor.

good luck.

Walmart, KMart and Target all have $4 Rx programs that cover certain meds. I don't know if Effexor is on it but you could call or check their web sites.

Could you visit a doctor locally and ask for samples?

Call your local hospital can help with meds or a connection to a program or provider. If your community has a mental health treatment community center call and tell them your situation and see if they can help or refer you somewhere.

** If you find you have to go off the Effexor, do it gradually with a doctor's advice to avoid very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

I hope this helps you!

Thanks Echoes. I knew about the 4 dollar program, but Effexor isn't one of them. I might talk to the doctor about switching to one of them, at least for a little bit. I do have a therapist here, but I don't see a psychologist for medications because they don't want to interrupt my long term treatment at school, but if I really feel my doctor won't listen to me, I will change.
