Hi All,

I was hoping someone could help me. My brother has schizophrenia and he lives in a small town so the dr there dont know much about drugs. He didnt react well to Geodon and is on Seroquel now. Are there any other effective drugs out there. He has mild delusions that usually increase when stressed. Thanks.

hey. sounds like he wants some kind of anti-psychotic medication to try and keep the delusions under control.

we have different brand names over here...

wiki lists a few, however...

Abilify is approved for bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia.
Risperdal is also approved for bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia and has also been recently approved for autism in children.
Zyprexa is also used for schizophrenia but as someone who has previously taken this medication I would not be eager to recommend it. I gained a ton of weight from it, and this is not an uncommon side effect. There have also been cases that have lead to diabetes.

These are just a few out there. I know there are several more meds used for schizophrenia.

Clozaril is the gold standard for treating schizophrenia.

It does require weekly bloodwork for at least 6 months, biweekly for another 6months (at least) and then monthly for as long as your are on the med.

But it really works! Take care..

I would suspect that the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) would probably give the doctor a lot of help. The doctor might also consider consulting with a phsyciatrist in another area by internet or phone. Does the Dr have acess to a consulting doctor on the case? I mean we could list all kinds of drugs but I think it would be best for the doctor to consult on the case. I'd hope that there might be a university/hospital in the area or consult by phone. Keep us posted on what happens. Schizophrenia sounds like a scary thing to have. THe person with schizophrenia that I know is on Risperidone. Good luck.

Thanks you all! I just needed a few names to tell the dr. since he said seroquel was basically it.
