So, my sleep has been jacked up for about 1 month. Recently this has gotten much worse, sleeping about 3 hours. Occasionally I'll get an additional 3 hours starting between 6 and 8am. Last night I took half a klonopin, a whole klonopin is 0.5 mg, and slept about 5 hours. I have a very limited supply. If the 1/2 klonopin continues to get 5 or so hours it would last just shy of 2 months. I do not have a pdoc or pcp but there is a doctor i could see at my moms office that might be able to give me something. What is a good med for sleep? NO AD's! I've read those interfere with the grieving process and dont want that as I am newly grieving the loss of my grandma.

Ambien works wells, though I don't need now that I'm taking Saphris. It works fantastic for sleep but it's and anti-psychotic. so I don't know if you want to take it.

Ambiesn is so-so. It only worked for about 2 months for me, and made me eat in my sleep which made my roommate really made because half the time it was her food.

Lunesta sucks.

Seroquel is very good. Some people only need a small amount (25-50mg, I need 100-200mg).

Trazodone works fora lot of people, but I think it's an old school AD if I'm not mistaken.

Realy the best I've found is klonopin.

Ambien is scary. So many people have done stupid things on it.

I liked Imovane (which is the 1st generation Lunesta which is 2nd), it did not make me do as dumb things, even if it had a tad weird effects like that but not nearly as serious. I didn't care about the metal taste because I was just happy I could sleep.

Some people are immune to Ambien and Imovane/Lunesta, then nothing happens.

I can't take Imovane anymore because it clashes with my Ritalin, even it it shouldn't, but for me it does.

So I am also on the market for a new sleeper. I might try Seroquel because many people here like it. But I'm sort of also reluctant. It seems to stay in the body a long time. I can't break down antihistamines properly and Seroquel is vaguely related.

I took Ambien and it didn't work. I'm on Lunesta now and it seems to be okay.

Try Hydroxyzine, for its a prescription antihistamine with no abuse potential. Vistaril is one of the brand names for it.

I take trazadone. It is an old school AD,but it has zero effect on depression on the dosage you would use for sleep. Sleep dosage is 50mg-150mg. Depression effect is over 300mg I believe, but you can check that. My father died last year and I had no issues grieving about it. What it did do for me is get a good night sleep so I could take care of his estate, handle my job and take care of my family.

I tried three of my Hydroxyzine the other night, and it didn't do it very quickly but I did pass out and stay out for 5-6 hours. Taking 1 or 2 of them might help some people. As far as I know hey are pretty safe and non habit forming. They were given to me for anxiety, but they are fairly worthless in that capacity unless anxiety attacking your way into a mid day nap is your thing.

I have taken cyclobenzaprine for my back and found I slept better, I also take Hydroxyzine for sleep but have not combined them before. Are you taking them together with no ill effect, am curious what dosages. I usually take 50mg of the atarax/vistaril, or 10mg of the cyclo. I considered 25of atarax and 10 cyclo for sleep but haven't tried yet.

I vote for Xanax extended release - not the short acting Xanax.

I have just come out of 9 months of severe insomnia due to a MAOI side effect. My doctor and I tried various things to offset it - melatonin and lunesta. I quickly became tolerant to melatonin and lunesta didn't work at all. I was on trazodone years ago but I was unable to drive the next morning.

Went down a notch on the MAOI and I take 2mg Xanax XR at night, about an hour to a half hour before I go to bed. The zombie effects are there in the morning but not as bad as trazodone. Plus, I tend to be super anxious and cranky in the mornings and since the Xanax is still in my system there's no more of that. Of course, I am still depressed as hell but at least I'm sleeping at night with no interruptions at all. The wake-ups at 2am made me literally go insane.

50-100mgs of Trazadone works great for me. I've been taking it nightly for several years. I've tried Klonopin, Ambien, Melatonin, and Seroquil - Trazodone is best for me for sleep with no groggy mornings. I know everyone is different, but this is what has worked for me.
Thanks for this!

Rx pills that have helped me: restoril, ativan, librium, neurontin.

I now find that I sleep well taking extra niacinamide (B3) at night. There are different forms of B3. Niacin causes a flush and can lower cholesterol. Niacinamide does not cause a flush, but has no beneficial effects on cholesterol levels.

I sometimes take melatonin and valarian root, but melatonin is a hormone and as such taking it long term can mess with your pineal and pituitary glands leading to health issues. All hormone replacement, including over the counter, should be done cautiously as it can interfere with your internal processes. As a once in a while thing it is great and usually results in a very peaceful sleep.

A low dosage of Remeron works well. I get zero side-effects, other than drowsiness on 15mg but your mileage may vary.

Ambien scares the daylight out of me. My daughter took it once. Very long story short, 60 minutes to get her to actually walk into an ER and during that time she flipped me on the pavement and at the time I had at least 80 pounds on her and she is very skinny. Another 5-6 hours in the ER to calm her down and she woke with zero memory of anything. No way I would risk taking that living with my daughter and grand daughter. Of course, not everyone reacts badly on it but an abundance of caution is warranted.

Antihistamines work on me, but after taking it for 203 days in a row it causes restless legs. Again, everyone is different.

Gabapentin and no benzo is helpful to me but others find them useful for sleep. Both have horrible withdrawals and benzos are definitely not something you want to take long term if it can be helped.

I don't know if there is anything that safe to take long term that actually help you sleep.

As other people have said, everybody is different so you won't know if something will work for you until you try it.

A low dose of Amitiptyline seems to work pretty well for me without side effects. By itself it depresses me a little (as all SNRIs seem to do but that's just me) but I take Wellbutrin to compensate. Not at the same time though, Wellbutrin is a bit of a stimulant so it has to be taken in the morning.

Seroquel made me a zombie. I slept for 10-12 hours at a time and I was half asleep the rest of the time. Melantonin is great but I'm very sleepy for several hours after I wake up. Not groggy but I just really feel like going back to sleep. I don't ever take it unless it's been a few days since I've slept more than a couple of hours. Valerian and chamomile don't do much of anything for me except a slight calming effect. Klonopin does absolutely nothing for me. Diazepam and Lorazepam make me very much more depressed. Antihistamines don't do a thing for me either. Most of them don't even work for allergies for me.

As for niacin, if you eat something before you take it then you probably won't get the flush at all. I actually took it for a little while specifically to lower my cholesterol.
Thanks for this!

I take doxepin and clonazepam. As long as I am on a regular schedule I get decent sleep.
I was on ambien for years until I got resistant and addicted.
Trazodone doesn't work for me either.
