Does anyone take medication for BPD or know of any that work?

My psychiatrist said he doesn't want to prescribe me medication because there are no studies done to prove which medications actually work for Borderline Personality Disorder. I am a firm believer in medication.

I have BPD, anxiety and I guess depression (not sure of the diagnosis now due to the new BPD diagnosis).

SSRI's helped my depression/anxiety for a short while but then started impacting it in a bad way. So I am currently not on any medication and my moods are erratic and my anxiety is slowly getting worse. My impulsivity is also getting more severe and I'm worried it'll just keep on getting worse.

Any thoughts?

Hi Khione. I think meds are importance for stabilizing moods. This article talks about options for BPD.

So do you think medication can be used to help stabilise moods? DBT has been suggested to me, but I'm not sure there is anyone in the mental health team I'm situated with who is experienced in DBT.. so that can't really happen for now. The psychiatrist said that I'd be put on a waiting list for it anyway but that can take up to 8 weeks.

Meds do help. It may take awhile to find the right ones that work. I'm going through that now, but my moods are definitely helped by meds.

I am not a psychiatrist so I don't know about what meds are possible. The article did say therapy is the most common treatment for BPD.

There are no approved drugs to treat BPD, and I don't think doctors on the NHS are allowed to prescribe off label, from what I've heard. I like Seroquel, it makes the suicidal thoughts and mood swings less intense, though both are still present. It doesn't cause me any side effects either, my body tolerates it really well.

Mood swings is often a big part. If it really is a huge thing, there is nothing that should prevent the doc prescribing a med aimed at stabilizing mood. Depending on your body chemistry, some antidepressants can destabilize you, but there are stabilizers aimed at bipolar as well. I'm sure it depends on where you are if they are OK prescribing for BPD.

I think meds can help with a lot of the symptoms but not fix every aspect of it. The mood swings can be helped with mood stabilizers definitely. I've never been diagnosed with BPD, but I think I have/had it but it's under better control. I still struggle with impulsiveness.

For example I

a little over a week ago. If I used some sort of coping strategy to get through that moment I may not have done what I did. I had the same thoughts yesterday when I was very overwhelmed but I made the decision NOT to take that action this time.

I think the best thing for mental illness is a combo of meds and therapy with a good support system.
