I'm trying to find an alternative to seroquel for PTSD insomnia because of the weight gain and nothing else seems to work. I took 600mg Gabapentin last night and although I was in bed for 8 hours my sleep quality was 34%. Today I will change my caffeine sensitivity back to extremely sensitive because I did have a latte yesterday at 11:30am and then some green tea later.

I take it for anxiety, which works very well for me. It doesn't make me tired though. I also take Seroquel for sleep, and I find that the gabapentin is causing more weight gain than the seroquel. I might eat my desk or chair if I run out of food.

Unfortunately I think all non-narcotic drugs for insomnia have weight gain as a side effect. You could maybe try some other antipsychotics like Zyprexa or even thorazine.

I'll mention those to my nurse. I have seroquel and that's the only medication that works for sleep.

Gabapentin is a fairly mild drug, except that taking it consistently for sleep and suddenly stopping taking it can easily mess up any sort of sleep you had going before.

I was given gabapentin for ptsd sleep issues and it really did not do anything for me either. My pdoc later prescribed me Prazosin for ptsd nightmares and that helped some. It's a blood pressure medication, but helps with calming you down at night and keeping the nightmares a little more mild. I mean, I never had insomnia, just horribly vivid nightmares, so I don't know if it will be exactly the same. It might be worth asking about though.

Good luck with everything! Keep pressing through and don't beat yourself up when things get too hard.

I am hoping to get off Klonopin and onto gabapentin for anxiety. I don't need anything for sleep. I really hope it works...I see all the horror stories on here about getting off Klonopin and I get nervous.

Gabapentin takes a week to two weeks to get to a therapeutic level, even to help with sleep.

Is that your personal opinion?

It is an opinion based on my own research in medical journals, what several of my physicians told me, and other physicians that I have come in contact with have recommended or instructed to their patients. Unless there are contraindications that it needs to be stopped or it is then found not to be helpful as it is not the right medication of the symptom or being used to treat for, it takes time to show its effectiveness as it is not a fast acting medication. It may not be the right medication to treat what it is needed for, but one day and one dose is typically not recommended to judge effectiveness.

Talk to your doctor, let them know what happened, and see what they recommend. Also do your own research. I do hope you find something that helps soon.
