Hi guys,
I've been on olanzapine for over 6 months (5mg) its a low dose but has really helped me with my severe anxiety and paranoia. I didn't gain much weight at first but have since put on a stone. I can't blame just the tablet as I do find it hard to control my eating sometimes (which I know is a side effect but I have always had a big appetite! I also started a new contraceptive pill and have noticed most of the weight has gone on since that, its progesterone only. Things have been stressful lately and so I think my overeating has been linked to that as well. I am not yet overweight but don't want to put anymore on. How do you guys control your eating? I exercise a lot, gym, swimming, yoga and weights. So some of the weight is muscle but not all. I worry cos I can get into eating disordered habits and I just want to eat normally! Thanks! x

I've been on both seroquel and resperidone for years and never gained any weight on them - I was overweight to begin with. But lately I've decided to lose weight and I've lost 20+ lbs by cutting out sweets, and going on a low carb diet. I'm trying to start walking too, but am finding that challenging.

Olanzapine causes the most weight gain out of all the anti-psychotics, and is bad for serum glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol.
Exercising and watching what you eat is the best thing if you are going to stay on it. Even doing everything right, you might not be able to lose much weight. When I got so bad I needed an antipsychotic I demanded one that is weight neutral and told my pdoc that I would refuse any of the others like olanzapine.

Don't underestimate the progesterone as a culprit for weight gain.

Zyprexa has made me gain about 30lbs since I started it a few months ago. I'm now currently at my heaviest weight ever...but I'm also more stable than I've ever been, so I kind of just have to deal with it. It's not about eating either. I eat the same amount, maybe less depending on how much I'm restricting (EDs and APs don't go well together). I gain on Zyprexa, and it doesn't help that I'm on Seroquel as well. Both mess with your metabolism.

Zyprexa is working fantastically well for me, and I think the weight gain has leveled off. The doctor put me on Metformin at the same time. Now to start with the hardcore exercise and healthy eating...I've done it before, can do it now...so that even if I don't lose the weight, I'll be healthier.

I take 400 mgs of Seroquel, and I've found that diet and exercise maintains my weight.

Unfortunately some of them do that.
