I am wondering what options I have. I'm currently taking Latuda but my insurance company denied it so I need something else. I know she'll put me back on zyprexa which I don't want as I've already gained almost 40 lbs on it. I want to go in with some information so she'll know I've done my homework and have some options. The only other meds I've taken are lithium and Thorazine and I'm not interested in either of those. I am schizoaffective bipolar type (currently depressive).
Suggestions? And how did they work for you?

I take Saphris and it works very well and no significant weight gain, plus it helps me sleep. I don't know if you insurance will cover it. Mine does but the copay is $100.

Seroquel was about an equal for me for Zyprexa and I didn't gain any weight on it. Right now I'm on Vraylar which is AWESOME. There's also Geodon, saphris like has been mentioned...lots of choices!

The other atypical antipsychotics that your insurance would probably cover are Risperdal, Seroquel, Geodon, and Abilify. All of those are available as generics. My personal favorite that I have taken for 15 years is Seroquel. I started it after being on Zyprexa and gaining lots of weight I would caution that Seroquel isn't completely weight neutral, but I thought it was a lot better than Zyprexa. I haven't taken Geodon, but many people here take it and could share their experiences.

A mood stabilizer might be an option given you are schizoaffective bipolar type. Lamictal is a good mood stabilizer that would help with your depressive symptoms. However, it does take a while to get to a therapeutic dose. It wouldn't help right away.

I have heard good things about Vraylar, but I have heard it was very expensive. Is that true?

Just curious. I might try it.

I've heard that too, but I'm not entirely sure if it's true because my insurance covers it 100% since my family has reached the out of pocket limit. If I could find my thing for it from the pharmacy I could probably tell you what the actual cost is, not sure if that would help or not.

I take Geodon. Originally for psychosis and depression. I think I was up to 180mg. I switched to it because Zyprexa made me gain weight. Geodon actually heleft me lose weight. At first you'll get knocked out give yourself 10 hours maybe 8 but I wouldn't risk it. Once your body gets use to it you won't have to sleep for so long.
