I am Bipolar I with ultradian cycling. I have been on Seroquel for most of the 15 years since initial diagnosis. I had tried Risperdal and Zyprexa prior to starting Seroquel. I have tried small doses of Risperdal, Latuda, and Rexulti for short periods of time with my 800 mgs of Seroquel, but those combos were mostly not effective or there were too many side effects. Several months ago my pdoc added a pinch of Abilify to my Seroquel and I felt a difference with the intensity of my moods. Now I have decreased Seroquel to 600 mg and increased Abilify to 7.5 mg. I may be able to get off Seroquel and replace it with Abilify eventually but for now I continue to take both. Have others had success with taking 2 atypical antipsychotics at the same time? Were there significant side effects of such combos? Did anyone manage to transition to just one antipsychotic over time? Thanks for any feedback.

Over the years I've taken over a dozen typical and atypical anti-psychotics, but I've never been on two at the same time. I currently take 400mgs of non-extended release Seroquel for schizophrenia and 200mgs of Lamotrigine for mood.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Thanks for this!

For me the side effect I had to look out for is prolonged QT rhythm of the heart. When my psychiatrist was concerned she would order an EKG. If the rhythm is prolonged too much the heart can go in arrhythmia. Only some APs can cause that effect, though.

I will discuss this with pdoc. Could you say what antipsychotics you were taking? Was one of them Geodon? Geodon on its own can cause prolonged QT rhythm intervals. Pdoc doesn't want me on it, because I had slightly abnormal EKG's on an older tricyclic antidepressant, Anafranil that was being used to treat my OCD when I was 15 years old.

I am sure I can go for EKG's when I go for my blood labs. It is a pretty quick test. I usually go to the testing center at the hospital quarterly. How often did you get EKG's?

I will follow up with pdoc.

Tolerance and efficacy of antipsychotics and psychotropics in general vary from patient to patient; some meds that really help certain people are useless or even harmful to others. You can't predict if a particular treatment strategy will work for you until your doctor implements it. It sounds like you're almost there.

I'm on both Seroquel non-extended release, 300 mg, and Risperidone 5 mg. It's a really good combination for me, and I haven't had any noticeable side effects.

Ability didn't do it to me. I'm currently on Latuda, and it hasn't caused it. t don't remember about Seroquel. Zyprexa and Geodon did, though. My pdoc found a list online of which ones were more likely to cause it. I don't have the URL but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that hard to search. Your experience may vary, though.

I am on 100mg. Seroquel (fairly low dose) and 80mg. Latuda. I don't notice any major side effects. I do hope to decrease and eventually drop the Seroquel so I can be on less medication.
Thanks for this!

For the past month I've been on 2: Zyprexa and Vraylar. My pdoc [finally] took me off the Zyprexa though!
Thanks for this!

Glad to hear you are off the Zyprexa. It is my least favorite of all typical and atypicals I have taken over the years. Tell me more about Vraylar. It is so new that there aren't many people here on it. My pdoc has mentioned it as another option.

Lots of people need more than one AP or AAP. Whatever it takes to find baseline .

Has anyone been put on Risperdal 6 mg and Ablify 3 mg for schizophrenia? The doc precribed ablify as an add on for depression a few months ago but it has done any good. I read they are incompatible together. Any ideas?
