Has anyone here tried
Risperidone?

What was your experience with it?

I've been on risperidone for years, and really like it. It's one of the meds, my brain really responds to. A pdoc put me on it originally because I was dissociating a lot, and having trouble distinguishing what was reality. But I discovered it also really improved my mood as an augmentation to my AD.

And I haven't gained any weight on it.

The only side effect I have on it, is it makes me kind of sleepy, so I take it at bed time.

It gets the job done. I'm on Abilify now, but the risperidone wasn't terrible. My doctor prescribes 2mgs tablets of risperidone for me to take on top of the Abilify+other things when and if I feel the need. I don't take it often, but when I do take it (at night), it works well at reducing agitation and such.

Long term, I think one problem is prolactin elevation. I think there's blood tests for that one.

I love risperdone. I was on 1 mg and it really helped with my OCD and depression. The depression and anxiety got worse recently because of a disease I have called gastroparesis, which is a paralyzed stomach, that led to losing my job earlier this year, and has gotten so bad I've had to move back in with my parents and we just got to where we are actually having to move my furniture out and get my house ready to sell, which has put me under an extraordinary amount of anxiety and stress. So it got upped recently to 2 mg. I take it at bedtime and can definitely feel a difference. I am much more relaxed and less depressed than I was. I have not gained weight with it, which is also a plus.

I seem to have responded quite well to risperidone. I was originally on 3mg, but have lowered it to 1mg. I was put on it because of paranoia and a bipolar diagnosis, but the bipolar diagnosis turned out not to be.
I might either stay at 1mg or possibly lower it to .5, and if i dont respond to .5 well ill go back up to 1.
I have not had an outburst since being on it, which is nearly two years, and it really seams to keep my emotions in check, and wipes away paranoia.
As far as side effects sedation is it, which is why i take it at bedtime.
The prolactin elevation is only a problem at high doses, and all other side effects are either rare or very rare, or are dose dependent.
Good luck

I had bad reactions to it. I gained a lot of weight very quickly (like 65lbs in a few months - all fat, which I don't normally gain), my blood sugar levels were messed up, it raised my blood pressure, and caused lactation. On top of that, it really didn't work for me, even when they bumped me up to 4mg.

My daughter also had a bad reaction to it. It caused high blood sugar, massive weight gain, high blood pressure, and INCREASED hallucinations.

Interestingly, my mother responded well to it.

i was on it for over a year and it was great. However, my hands and feet swelled after that so I was taken off of it.

I took Risperidone for a few months for OCD. I don't think I felt any real effect from it except that it knocked me out when I took it. I have insomnia so that was a good thing. My current pdoc doesn't really think I need to take anything for OCD and gave me something else for insomnia. I think I might have liked to try a higher dose but at the time depression was my most immediate issue.
