Did the pdoc say you had to go off the xanax?

IDK, how long have you been on it? Since it's a new doc, maybe he wants to see if the original issue for which it was prescribed is still there? Or put you on something not so addictive, and not so short acting? If you've been on it a long time (a year or more) I think the suggested withdrawal time is 8 - 12 weeks.

He obviously has no knowledge of benzos at all let alone xanax. What dosage are you on and for how long? That makes a huge difference in what kind of time you need and how much to reduce by, etc. Your doc's view is totally unrealistic and could be considered cruel. Here's a web site for you to check out: www.benzo.org.uk and best wishes to you, especially if you cannot find another doctor! </font> |

Getting off Xanax is a big deal. I am glad you are doing it. It will be rough, but in the end you will feel a lot better.
Sounds like your pdoc is not going to be a whole lot of help... Keep posting here---we are here to support you.

I was on xanax for 17 years at the same dosage of 1 mg at night. I was taken off it immediately when I overdosed (another story--I could have ODed on any of my meds but chose xanax). Anyway, I was put on klonopin instead. I also take other meds (actually quite a few) for bipolar 1.
I never had to increase my dose of xanax & it just helped me sleep so I never took it in the day time as I didn't want to get sleepy in the day time. I don't think I was addicted or I would have craved a higher dose or had some effect from it that would make me want to take it other than prescribed. I don't think everyone who is on xanax gets addicted. It can be used therapeutically as prescribed.--Suzy |

freewill, a pharmacist might be able to help you.
Also, you could Google Xanax and see what pops up. </font><blockquote><div id="quote"><font class="small">Quote:</font> Important Considerations for Patients Diagnosed with Panic Disorder At doses greater than 4 mg per day, XANAX has the potential to cause severe emotional and physical dependence in some patients and these individuals may find it exceedingly difficult to terminate treatment. It is important that your physician help you discontinue this medication in a careful and safe manner to avoid overly extended use of XANAX. In addition, the extended use of XANAX at doses greater than 4 mg per day appears to increase the incidence and severity of withdrawal reactions when the drug is discontinued. These are generally minor but seizure can occur, especially if you reduce the dose too rapidly or discontinue the medication abruptly. Seizure can be life-threatening </div></font></blockquote><font class="post"> </font><blockquote><div id="quote"><font class="small">Quote:</font> Can I just stop taking this drug if I feel it's not working? Do not stop taking this medication abruptly or decrease the dose without consulting your physician, since potentially severe discontinuation symptoms can occur. </div></font></blockquote><font class="post"> Those quotes are from the site Xanax.com Here is an article I found when I Googled: http://lexington-on-line.com/naf_xanax.html And here is another site with a recommended tapering schedule, though there is other info there that says every person is different and no one schedule fits all: http://www.power-surge.com/educate/xanax.htm I hope these are helpful to you! And I hope you feel better soon. |
