I currently take regular Xanax (alprazolam) at 0.5 mg 3 times daily as needed. I feel like this is not consistent, and was wondering if anyone here has tried the Xanax XR. How much different is it then the regular stuff? Also, would my doc have samples of it, or is it on of those class 2 controlled things....? XANAX XR

Jennifer,

I see no one has answered your question; perhaps no one knows the answer.

I take Xanax IR, 1.50mg. per day and I have for many years. I guess I am lucky that it seems to last in my system so i don't get the ups and downs.

I *can* tell you that all benzodiazepines are controlled substances; not sure which level, but think they are the least of them.

Best wishes
Olivia

Hi Jennifer,
I don't know anything about xanax xr, but if a benzo is something you're going to need to take, I would recommend asking about clonazepam. It has a longer half-life and doesn't give you the interdosal anxiety that xanax does.
Take care,
Okie

Can you explain about feeling that it isn't consistant?

I am prescribed Xanax .5mg up to 3 times a day, but really it is to use as I need it. I don't often need it. Some days I need a whole one to calm down when I'm in a really distressed state; some days I need to "nibble" on it and I will take 1/4 of a tablet several or a few times throughout the day; other days I don't need it at all (but it feels good that it's there).

I think if I tried to actually take it 3 times a day, I would feel an up and down effect as it began working and then began to wear off. Is this what you mean? Could you regulate that by taking half 6 times a day instead, with your doctor's approval of course. That might give a more 'even' effect is what I was thinking.

I hope this helps!

I am on Xanax XR. It eliminated the ups and downs I was getting taking Xanax throughout the day. I take 2mg at night and that gets me through.
The only down side is I also suffer from insomnia and was on meds that I cannot take with the Xanax XR.
