Hi I've been on effexor xr 75 mgs for about 8 years worked pretty good but ran back into some anxiety and depression . My doctor added on 15mg of mirtazapine . I've had the script for a couple days now and have been too scared to take it . I have a couple questions . I know it usually makes you sleepy does it gradually come on and you fall asleep or do you like pass out ? What is vertigo and how bad so you feel the next day after taking it? Have any of you already been on the effexor for a while and then added remeron are the side effects any different ? Any advice or experiences will help. !!! P.s I'm really psyching myself out by all the mentions of vivid dreams , idk why though .

Hi, brokenandbattered32, and welcome to Psych Central! Not everyone gets the side effects that are mentioned. I took remeron. It was fine except I gained weight like crazy. My sis takes effexor with no problems. Neither causes sleepiness in us.
Vertigo is dizziness. I don't see why taking them both could be bad. But you'll only know how your body acts by trying both off them. You and your doc can monitor any potential side effects. Okay? ![]() ![]() |

Hi and thank you! With remeron did you crash or did you gently get tired and fall asleep?

No, I don't recall that Remeron knocked me out. But I can take a bunch of stuff and still remain awake!

I know you're not addressing me, but I don't recall vivid dreams with anything I took but maybe Seroquel. They aren't bad at all. I just had to think about whether I dreamed something or actually experienced it!

hi. 15mgs/remeron can be helpful for low mood and anxiety. it can also be very sedating. weight gain is fairly common with remeron, although I've read that higher doses (30, 45mgs, for instance...) can help some people and the higher doses are less sedating and cause less weight gain.
75mgs/effexor isn't a whole lot. i think that dose is pretty much ssri-action. have you talked to your doctor about trying to increase the effexor, instead of adding another drug? both approaches, of course, have pros and cons. the effexor (full-dose) and remeron combination was/is somewhat popular in "treatment-resistant" depression for a while there...its been nicknamed 'California Rocketfuel," because the combination affects all kinds of neurotransmitters and helps some people who had previously not responded to treatment, or whose treatments had stopped working. i hope things get better for you soon. |

Yes I had vivid dreams and I wasn't on effexor but I was on Cymbalta which is similar. I was also on seroquel and depakote at the time

Oops I wrote my experience with Effexor and Risperidone lol. I did take Remeron to help me sleep at one point but it didn't help at all, I am kind of hard to knock out though. So I wouldn't worry about the side effects until you have tried it and see if it even works. When I took saphris (which did immediately knock me out) I would take it when I was already laying in bed so I didn't get all those weird feelings. Remeron won't hit is as fast as saphris because it is sublingual but even if it does knock you out quick you won't notice things like vertigo if you are already in bed.
