Do most of you go to a Psychiatrist or to a internal med doc for your depression/anxiety meds?

Psychiatrist. There was only one time when I had to ask my primary care doc for a prescrip, and that was during a time when my pdoc was on medical leave for 6 months. And they wanted assurance that I would be returning to a psychiatrist for med management because they didn't want to deal with psychiatric drugs. Other than than, my pdoc has been the only one monitoring my meds for the last 9 years.

I wouldn't want anyone else to mess with my brain chemistry. I don't trust the general pracs to know enough or care enough about psychiatric issues to be in charge of my head. LOL!

When I first got put on meds my GP did it. But quickly my problems escalated and he knew he was in over his head so he referred me to a pdoc. I am now on my 4th Pdoc because they have either quit, moved or I just didn't get along with them. I really respect my pdoc as well as my GP and they communicate between the two of them so they both know what is going on at all times. Like my GP knows that when he has to put my on predisone to let my pdoc know so he can be prepared just in case I go nutty.

A Psychiatrist. I wouldn't trust anyone but a Mental Health professional to prescribe my medications.

Hubby goes to a psychiatrist. Like bptoo, we wouldn't trust anyone with his meds but a pdoc. GP have enough "regular" stuff to learn and keep up to date. Pdocs focus on meds for mental illnesses.

For us, a pdoc is the only way to go.
