I smoke and take antipsychotics. I never had a pdoc even imply that it was an issue.

Now that you say that, I have always had to take a pretty high dose of whatever antipsychotic I'm on. Do be careful tho, about tardive dyskensia. Long term use, at higher doses, can putf you at a greater risk. I developed it several years ago, and atf this point, it's not going away for me.

You shouldn't smoke at all, but I don't think the two would interfere.

INterestingly this does not apply to vaping...it's the actual smoke not the nicotine......

Ugh, don't start smoking! Smoking is so, so damaging to every cell in your body. Smoking makes you more vulnerable to EVERY killer disease. Having scary symptoms...going to the doctor...waiting for tests...waiting and waiting for results, an anxious wreck....It's enough to make anyone run from cigarettes.
Thanks for this!

I have never heard of tobacco smoking clashing with those meds. However if you are smoking cannibis or some other whacky tobbaky then the answer would be no.

This is not true for all APs.

My understanding is it depends on how the drug is metabolised by specific enzymes which varies from AP to AP.

The only one I know specifically being affected by smoking is Clozapine. That came from my pdoc.

My suggestion to the OP is to ask their pdoc.

Haldol is for sure as well because I looked it up in the literature a few years back for Newtus.

Check it out I found a handy chart...

Hm, what would a google search say?

Personally, I would quit smoking. If you just started, you better just stop. I wouldn't wish an addiction on top of mental illness on anybody.
Thanks for this!

While taking up smoking is harming yourself....The answer to your question is yes, you can take antipsychotics while smoking.

In general, yes. There are apparently a few exceptions I did not know about. I am certainly curious now that someone has brought it up.

And they show that smoking can alter the available effective drug action as you said, which is interesting. Many things can alter how a particular drug will affect you. These articles don't, however, claim unilaterally that it applies to all drugs or that the exact amount of loss of efficacy, if any, will be half. (In fact the first article you cite says that sometimes smoking can increase effectivity.)I agree that it would be worth bringing these articles to the attention of your doctor if you're changing your smoking habits.

What you don't know can hurt you...or help you...but it may be up to you to find out because I've never had a pdoc ask about smoking...
