I just read this article http://psychcentral.com/blog/archive...warning-label/
and this made me worry a bit, I just started taking zyprexa 2 days ago. Should I call my pdoc as soon as possible to switch? because I wouldnt want to get type 2 diabetes for a side affect from taking this drug...

I had the unfortunate experience of taking Zyprexa and gaining about 40 pounds. By the time I figured out why I was gaining so much weight I had put on 40 pounds. I'm not sure how common this side effect is but I do know several people who have had a similar experience. I would definitely speak with your doctor and let him or her know you are concerned about this drug. There are other meds in the same class that may be a better option. For example, I switched from Zyprexa to Seroquel and things have worked out well.

hopefully there is another alternative, because I just got off Seroquel because I was on it for a long time and it has lost it's affect thats why my pdoc put me on zyprexa.

I wouldn't panic. But I would go ahead and put in a call to my doctor and ask about my concerns. I'm sure the doctor is aware of the side effects and is monitoring your physical response. Also, pharmacists are pretty cool about talking about drugs and stuff.

Will you let us know what you find out?

Everyone reacts to medications differently, but my experience with Zyprexa was not a good one. It made me gain about 60 pounds. The worst part was that it did not help my moods. I was even more depressed because I did not like the way I looked. My pdoc several years later told me that they found out that zyprexa turns off the part of your brain that tells you that you are full. So be very carefull.

It is well known that zyprexa causes weight gain, but if you aren't well it can be a life saver. Many who take it are also very ill and live very unhealthy lifestyles. Couple this with zyprexa and it leads to weight gain plus related medical issues.
I haven't had it myself but apparently it increases your appetite so you eat more, hence gain weight. If you keep eating no more than normal, you shouldn't gain - an interesting fact is that those suffering from anorexia nervosa don't gain weight when they take zyprexa;
Weight gain still comes down to calories consumed, and energy used up by your body - it is not that hard in concept, a bit harder in reality.
