I want to try a tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Until now I've only tried SSRI's and SNRI's. They don't do anything for me. Only a combination of Wellbutrin and Venlafaxine helped a little bit, but not anymore.
I'm not sure which I should try. I know the psychiatrist has to prescribe them to me, but I would like to hear from people who've actually tried those meds. Some examples of TCAs: amitriptyline (Elavil), desipramine (Norpramin, Pertofrane), doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), protriptyline (Vivactil), and trimipramine (Surmontil). |

I have tried amitriptylene, protriptylene and currently take nortriptylene.
According to my pdoc, protrip is likely to increase energy and amitrip is likely to make you sleepy and nortrip falls somewhere in the middle. One of the good things about nortrip is that there is actually a blood test to see if the amount in your system is within a certain range. If you are in that range and not being helped, then it is not likely to help. If you go above, then you can safely decrease and expect the good effects to continue. It does give me dry mouth and eyes. |

i took tofranil for a while. it was OK. they're not recommended if you've had manic episodes, and I think they try other antidepressants when there's been psychosis, too.
weight gain, dry mouth, sometimes dizziness. On the plus side, it worked quickly, and it didn't make me as numb and apathetic as cymbalta. |
