Have any of you taken Zyprexa (Olanzapine) and gotten diabetes as a result from it? I read that this drug can cause it...I've been on it for about 1-2 years...I'm scared. Zyprexa=Diabetes?

My mother takes Zyprexa and Effexor. She's been on antidepressants so long that only the Zyprexa works. She initially put on 50 lbs within the first few months of taking them, and is up to a total of 80lbs.

She is concidered diabetic because her blood sugar is constantly above 120 (used to be concidered borderline but now either you are or you aren't apparently). She is on an oral diabeties med and has to watch diet and exercise.

The doctor has tried to take her off the Zyprexa several times, she does loose the weight blood sugar is good, but is suicidal. So she stays on the Zyprexa. She is on a fine line right now too because the doctor says anymore weight gain and he won't write the Rx for the Zyprexa anymore.

I took Zyprexa but fortunately did not develop diabetes. I did, however, experience the weight gain that so many patients experience. I have since switched to Seroquel which is working out very well for me.

I was on Zyprexa for three years and my pdoc took me off of it after reading about the possibility of a patient contracting diabetes because of it. Since that time I've been on Abilify and Geodon. The Abilify did nothing for me and the Geodon is a little better. If I had my choice I'd go back on Zyprexa in a heartbeat. I've never taken a med that worked so well and so quickly as the Zyprexa did. Oh well....

Read their site: http://www.zyprexa.com/common_pages/safety.jsp

They tell you how to tell if you are at risk and what precautions your doctor should be taking, etc. Talk to your pdoc and alert him you're scared and get him to tell you what he knows; there's been class action lawsuits because of its causing diabetes but not everyone is going to get diabetes just because of the drug -- it increases your risk though.

My mother also takes Zyprexa for her Schizophrenia and has been diagonosed with diabetes that apparently was caused by the Zyprexa. Not the diabetes that requires injections though. I'm not sure which type that is.

She's also gained ALOT of weight from this medication.
