Mirapex is used for bipolar disorder. I'm taking it now. Sometimes it takes time to find the right combination of meds. Some people are treatment resistant to meds.

It does take a long time to get meds sorted out. It takes 8 meds to keep me stable. Some people only need one or two. Everyone is different.

Your post is titled "Xanax". Do you have a question about Xanax?

There are other medications out there for ADD that work well, and help other problems. Look up on this site and you can find out so much, about so many issues. I wish you all the luck.

They start out at .25 mg and of course it would be great if that dose worked for everybody. I think 3mg is not an unusual dose for doctors who are very serious about a very serious anxiety to prescribe, but I think it would be rare for them to increase it beyond this.

3mg, one every so many hours, is the dose my psychiatrist prescribed me when I was going through a crippling anxiety period after a long manic episode. It was the first time I had ever taken it. I found 2mg worked well enough if I took them at the same time. It was magically effective for me. But I didn't take any for a very long time after the 2 renewals.

I have an ongoing prescription for 2mg a day prn now, because my new psychiatrist doesn't care what happens to me (my new hypothesis). I try to be very sparing with them.

If your son has a serious, long-term illness(es), one of them being anxiety, he may need a long-term anti-anxiety medication, whether or not the med is "addictive." You could ask the doc about other anxiety meds. Some SSRIs have anti-anxiety properties.

I'd like you to be aware of the fact that many people with anxiety/depression do benefit from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Sometimes, after DBT training, a person functions better and may need fewer meds. There is no guarantee; however, the DBT approach can be very helpful to the individual suffering. Please ask the doctor about DBT.

Also, please do check with NAMI (www.NAMI.org) as I have mentioned to you in other threads. NAMI can be invaluable to individuals suffering and to their families.

You are a very concerned mother, which is great! Keep asking questions!
