Ok, so hear me out here:

Because of the apparent problem that there is with me taking SSRI's etc., we need to resort to using antipsychotics for the anxiety relieving effects.

I am on Seroquel right now (which works reasonably well, but with sedation effects)
I have tried Risperdal for anxiety without much luck.

I have been on other APs before and am willing to try them again. I actually researched and found that there are more typical APs out there than I thought. I was under the impression that we are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

So which APs would you say are effective for anxiety (I know they are not best but we cannot do much more than that right now)

Can you get Opipramol? It's the mildest antianxiety antidepressant drug in terms of side effects. Milder than every single ssri, snri out there in the market. coz its mechanism of action is completely different. I've just started it 4 days ago so i cant speak for the effectiveness in healing anxiety, but according to what i've read it kicks in with in 2 weeks of intake. its quite commonly used in europe, not so much in western countries yet. which i think it should, coz we can all use some extra help with more options available to us..

or try bupsar maybe?

From what I've heard Seroquel is the main one that supposedly works for anxiety. I did find it fairly mellow but, despite what doctors want to believe, the only real cure for bad anxiety is benzodiazepines. I think its "dangers" are overblown. But maybe not. At any rate I'm assuming you can't use them. I've been taking Latuda at 60mg for about 4 years now. I would say it doesn't help with anxiety. On the other hand I haven't had much. It's over all been a great drug except for akathisia which is horrible but treatable.

I wish I were more help.
Thanks for this!

I was originally prescribed Seroquel for my anxiety, but it has not worked at all yet. It helped my depression and psychotic symptoms so I am thankful for that. SSRIs do not work for me either, I have tried pretty much all of them, and they just make me irritable and make my symptoms worse. Best of luck to you, I am also trying to figure out what will help my anxiety.

I tried Latuda temporarily and it did knock down the full blown anxiety attacks. It caused akathisia that was torture. I am anti-med anyway so I only gave meds one more try with sertraline (zoloft) and went into a prolonged hell on earth manic/panic attack.

Abilify helped me with anxiety. It kind of numbed me to everything, but since I was suicidal, that was probably a good thing

Seroquel (maybe a low dose?)
Olanzapine

If the anxiety is bad, why not a benzodiazepine such as clonazepam or lorazepam? Just thinking out loud!

APs are a hit or miss with each and every different person. Have you tried buspar or gabapentin?? I’ve been on seroquel for 12 years and it does nothing for my anxiety. But it may help the next.
Thanks for this!

Did you find when you first started taking it it actually GAVE you anxiety? I recently upped my dose (take for treatment resistant depression) and my anxiety has increased a lot.

I have had the experience in the past with meds (especially Prozac) where it initially CAUSED anxiety but then later REDUCED anxiety.

Thanks in advance.

it really depends. the antipsychotics are also known as tranquilizers, so...if one can tolerate them w/o tics, twitches, akathisia, etc., then they can help anxiety and agitation.

with the older ones, i would think perphenazine might be a good idea. it was (is?) packaged with Elavil in one pill, to help some forms of depression (low dose perphenazine), or psychotic disorders with a strong depression component (the higher dose combo pills). in a big study, perphenazine did almost as well as Zyprexa in people with Schizophrenia, w/o the same level of metabolic problems, a tad more twitches and such.

loxapine is an older one that PET scans suggest might be "atypical" at low doses. higher doses...not much different from haldol.

amoxapine is a tca antidepressant that doubles (at higher doses) as a tranquilizer. its a tca, so not a good idea if you're suicidal or have heart problems. a former shrink swears by it for psychotic depression.
Thanks for this!

I have had years when my anxiety was severe. I tried many meds, including several AP's. None of them helped at all. They just caused me to feel extremely sleepy. So I was both anxious and half-asleep.

Recently, I was put on Gabapentin (neurontin) and told that would help my anxiety. It hasn't done anything except cause me to keep falling asleep.

The only med that ever helped me with anxiety was Klonopin. It is beyond belief that the one psych med type that truly helps relieve anxiety is benzos, and pdocs don't want to prescribe benzos.

I was put on Neurontin (gabapentin) for anxiety. It didn't help my anxiety. Mainly it just made me very hungry an hour or two after I took it.

Amitriptyline is an old antidepressant with an anxiety reducing effect. I like that drug.

Statistically, high potency typical neuroleptics are the best for anxiety. Cannot talk from experience, never tried them.
