Does anyone here with BPD take any medication as needed ? Particularly for the psychosis, paranoia, and/or anxiety part of BPD?

I don't know that such medications would be prescribed p.r.n. for a patient because of the chance of overdose? Nailing down when one should/should not take it so they can't take "too much" if they're taking it according to instructions is probably a legal concern and I don't know that insurance companies would like it either if they didn't know when they were going to have to pay for it. I imagine one could take something less than prescribed though, is that sort of what you're asking, if people and their doctors have a separate "yeah, just take it when needed but not more than prescribed" like I have for my Asthma/Albuterol inhaler?

Well, I use Xanax that way and it isn't a problem.
Insurance isn't an issue at all. I have lousy coverage so I just proceed as if I don't have any. Currently I get my Xanax (an Rx of 90 that I fill once or twice a year) through Walmart's $4 Rx program. I meant to be asking if anyone is currently doing this, wondering what if any meds are out there that can be used PRN. But thanks for your input! Always appreciated, Perna. |

All my meds are to be taken daily, including klonopin at night. Rarely I get very agitated & will take a half dose of klonopin during the day, but it makes me really sleepy so I do that about once every 6 mos.
My meds provider says I will need to be on meds the rest of my life for bipolar since I had delusions, paranoia & mixed episodes. Wish it weren't true. But have had some suicide attempts so I have to listen to the experts.--Suzy |

Sorry, should have put a trigger on previous post due to mentioning suicide. Haven't been here for awhile so I forgot. Please accept my apologies.--Suzy

Yeah, most benzos can be taken prn for anxiety, and I assume for sleep. I take Klonopin right now but find that jagermiester works better. I've also heard of (atypical) antipsychotics (specifically Zyprexa) being used prn. Ambien/Lunesta are alsoSUPPOSED to be taken prn for sleep. Most people end up abusing them, though.

I take Librium PRN, it works better than any other benzo I've taken. Unless a BPD patient is suicidal, then hopefully---hopefully---the prescribing physician would monitor the meds closely--if not hospitalize the patient. Thus, taking meds for BPD PRN can be beneficial. Sleeping pills like Lunesta and Ambien should not be PRN..... ![]() |
