Hello, My mother in law, who just a year ago had viral encephalitis, just went off dilantin (350mg/day) in June. She has been exhibiting "manic" behavior for about the last month. Can this in any way be attributed to her discontinuing her Dilantin? I have tried to researching this online with no sucess. She has an appt. in 2 wks with her rehab Dr?? Her son is bi-polar, but she showed no signs of this behavoir before her illness. Any advice? We are so afraid that she will just crash physically, or hurt herself in the process of trying to get her tasks done. She lost 30lbs and is very frail looking. We thought that when she was off all meds she would be feeling better but this is extreme. She never sits still, works til exhaustion, comments that everything is wonderful and great, rarely sleeps more than 3-4 hrs and is constantly thinking, moving and is much more aggressive/irritalble than she ever was before. ? Isn't this manic behavior. Thanks for listening. Cher

It is very important that someone takes this up with her doc, it can be a reaction, or bipolar behaviour emerging, related or not related to her meds and/or medical condition.
For her sake and the family's sake take this up with her doc as soon as possible. I wish you all lots of luck with this. Take care, DE In giving advice seek to help, not please your friend SOLON
