HI everyone,
I'm on Lexapro and it doesn't seem to be working for me. I have gone into a relapse of depression. I'm thinking about asking to switched to a different medication. Since I'm overweight I need one that doesn't cause weight gain. I've tried many others: Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft, etc which didn't seem to work. I was wondering about Cymbalta or Effexor.

I take welbutrin and it doesn't cause any weight gain for me. And if I take it correctly It seems to curb my appetite .. but that part could be all in my head ...

Although I have never taken Lexapro, my doctor told me it is a weight neutral AD and won't lead to weight gain like paxil, etc. However, your experience seems to bely that.
I am on Wellbutrin and so far has not lead to weight gain and in fact curbs my appetite. My PNP told me that sometimes her prescription of it is questioned as they want to make sure she is not prescribing it solely for weight loss.

Hi, I'm in the same boat, I don't know if it's in my head though or not. I've been on so many antidepressants, and I seem to quit them all for "weight gain" fears. I don't know. I was wondering about Cymbalta. Anyone have any good experiences with this one?

I began Pristiq ("new Effexor") and my appetite has been seriously curbed and I have dropped a few pounds. This is really different for me. Not sure if it will continue, but so far so good.

Hey Whales -
if you're (more than slightly) overweight, maybe you could try Reductil (Meridia in the US)? I don't remember what your BMI has to be so you can start taking it but here's a Wikipedia article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sibutramine Just an idea you could discuss with your doctor.

I take Cymbalta and it's been weight neutral. I might have even lost a pound or two. I love the stuff. It works well for me and I'm not gaining any extra weight.

I tried Cymbalta a long time ago. It didn't cause me any less weight gain than any of the others (except for Wellbutrin, which I don't *think* would have caused weight gain but I didn't take it for very long because it made me feel overstimulated).

I've been on Wellbutrin for 8 months and it has caused weight gain. Everyone is different and I have heard of quite a few people who have gained on it. Sorry to say, I have not heard of any psych med except maybe stimulants that do not cause weight gain eventually.

another point to mention....
when you take anti-depressants, your mood changes and hopefully you feel less anxious and depressed therefore you may have increased appetite.....eating more...gaining weight I know when I wasnt taking medication, I was nervous and depressed and would not eat...... |

I've been on Pristiq the past 5 weeks and it has not caused any weight gain at all. In fact when I eat I am quite satisfied and have little desire to pig out. Add to it that I exercise 3x a week and it seems to be a good balance.

Check this out - a link that Dr. Grohol posted on this very site:
http://carlatpsychiatry.blogspot.com...t-pristiq.html The above link is essentially saying that Pristiq is to keep making money for the drug company Wyeth, as the Effexor patent is going to run out. Pristiq is nothing but a metabolite of Effexor. Do a web search on effexor and weight gain---especially after taking the drug for 4-5 months; almost everyone on it gains weight. Sorry. I hope you are not one of them! |
