Chemical Imbalance Article

I found this article on the internet and thought I would share it with you all because it is incredibly AWESOME. It is VERY long, though, so keep that in mind and either break it up into portions for reading/mentally-digesting it or else pick a time when you can sit down & read through it, when you will have a good chunk of time to do so.

This article really, REALLY helped me understand the medical science behind the meds used to treat various mental health issues. I had been very skeptical of meds for over 20 years because I did not understand how they really worked or why treatment with them sometimes seems like a "crap shoot". This in turn fueled, fed, and enabled my suspicions against the MH field which I saw as being an adjunct to the oppressive "system", that is, a vehicle for persecution and invalidation of those like Me in society who are Different.

Reading this article was very enlightening for me and changed my thinking a lot. It helped me to see there is very real medical science going on here, not just "snake oil" and helped me to change my opinion about the possibilities of medication for treating these issues.

Yeah, this article was literally life-changing for me. I'd been considering treatment because I was just so miserable and tired of my condition, but still felt fearful and suspicious, with an almost "cultish" distrust of the medical establishment, especially psychiatry and in particular psychiatric medications. When I read this article it was like the LIGHTS went on and I was able to feel SO much better about making that decision. Being informed is always better than not.

I enjoyed the article too. The analogy for serotonin will be very useful in explaining my life history when I write that big autobiography!

This article was a great comfort to me. I fear damning myself to complacency rather than being "more myself" or something. One odd thing about starting medication is that I felt like I was betraying myself somehow, like my old self was waiting around, wondering where I've gone. This article helped me build confidence. Thank you very much for posting it!

Also, there had been some posts here in the past where people had complained that certain antidepressants make them sweat profusely and/or shake. I thought it was worth pointing out this statement from the article:

Likely to occur by accident by combining two Serotonin-increasing medications or substances, Serotonin Syndrome (SS) produces violent trembling, profuse sweating, insomnia, nausea, teeth chattering, chilling, shivering, aggressiveness, over-confidence, agitation, and malignant hyperthermia. Emergency medical treatment is required, utilizing medications that neutralize or block the action of Serotonin as the treatment for Serotonin Syndrome (SS).

I am not a supporter of modern psychiatry, but this article is total propaganda, and preys upon the lack of knowledge most patients have about pharmacology and chemistry.
