You should have been given some important dietary guidelines with respect to avoiding certain foods that contain purines. The metabolism of purines leads to the crystals in the joints that are the hallmark of gout. The main things to avoid are red meat and certain seafoods, whereas dairy is a good thing. A very newly published study links gout with red meat consumption, in particular. Here's an overview site: http://www.podiatry.curtin.edu.au/encyclopedia/gout/

There are also a couple of drugs that encourage the kidneys to flush those salts out in urine (colchicine, allopurinol, and some newer ones). Really, it's a routine medical treatment.

I'd consider gout to be quite independent of the mood problems, although there are certain symptoms that are possibly shared. Gout can be depressing, certainly.

You should be under a doctor's direct supervision for this. Acute attacks of gout can permanently damage the soft tissue in the joints. Analgesic anti-inflammatories can help with some symptoms, but you need to treat the high blood uric acid concentrations directly.

Good luck,
Lar

Hello Larry,

I didn't know that you participate here as well. You look as sharp as I know you to be. I'm not quite as comfortable with the format here. Has a higher learning curve, I've found. But everone has been nice and supportive. Just thought I'd say hi.

Hey Toph. From the picture, looks like you need a haircut. Don't leave that too long. You wanna look sharp now that the warm weather is coming.

I was kinda purposefully enticed over here. When I did a search on various aspects of nutrition, and found nothing, I was aghast. I can't imagine trying to manage mental illness without considering dietary intake, but that seems to be the norm these days.

Anyway, welcome. It's less busy over here, and I don't always read the messages every day. You'll pick up on how to work this site. It's way easier to search by poster's name, topic, etc. Built-in private messages. Just too much animation and little smiley things for my taste.

Hey Larry,
I came across this late, but the article was very helpful. I have an uncle with gout, among other things. He is very non-compliant with his health issues, so hopefully this will help convince him of the need to take care of himself. He's really a grouch, so maybe if he can take some active steps to control his pain, he might improve.

Thanks for being such a helpful resource!

I would consider the Anafranil and Prozac to be potientally dangerous together. Prozac can interfere with the metabolism of tricyclic antidepressants; lethal cases of Prozac and Elavil (another tricyclic) are widely known. I'd recommend checking with you pharmacist. Oh, and no grapefruit juice with the Anafranil either, can increase the levels. Remember folks, tricylics are easy to over dose on.
