It seems to me that, as all ADs have either stimulant or sedative properties (AFAIK), psychiatrists should sometimes prescribe "cocktails" of "activating" and sedating ADs together, for example, Prozac and Zoloft simultaneously. Does anyone know if this is done, if not why not, and how it tends to work for the person taking them? (primarily does it tend to result in a antidepressive effect without energizing or de-energizing the person, or does it tend to give them "energy swings"?)

Hmmm i was reading somewhere recently, may have been on this site, that somebody was tapering off Zoloft and going onto Prozac (may have been the other way round) and towards the end of the tapering it was advised that he/she go onto the other antidepressant so as to be taking both simultaneously, to avoid a time of possible relapse if the person quit one antidepressant and then had to wait at least two weeks for the next antidepressant to kick in. So if my memory is accurate, I think it is ok for both to be taken at once, but I have no idea what the reaction is.

Does Paxil and Wellbutrin fit into that? Paxil is sedating, Wellbutrin is stimulating... two markedly different ADs. I take Paxil at night and Wellbutrin in the morning. And right now, it seems to keep me stable.

The problem with taking two SSRIs together -- like Prozac and Zoloft -- is that there's a risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a very dangerous condition.

Otherwise, yes, it can be done. Wellbutrin and a sedating AD, for example, is a common enough choice. (Wellbutrin does not affect serotonin, so it shouldn't be a problem in terms of serotonin syndrome.) Also, SSRIs and TCAs are sometimes recommended -- the TCAs are so much less selective than the SSRIs or SSNRIs that it may be more effective for those who are only partial responders to serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

Just a few thoughts on it.
