I started taking Seroquel for the first time last night, very small dosage, 25mg., I slept for 12 hrs. straight, woke up a couple of times but just could not get up, I want to start living again, not sleep my way through, I guess I will see how the next few days go, going to see my doctor on tuesday, will be asking a lot of questions.
Any feedback welcome, I read most of what is written about it here, really dont like what I read and still very scared and now annoyed...

I haven't taken seroquel myself but work in a residential treatment center for troubled adolescents. Many of the kids there take the drug and it is very common for it to knock you out. I think that's the biggest reason why the drug is stopped oftentimes. Some people just get zonked on it and can't function. However, if you can ride it out, sometimes your body does adjust and the effect isn't as great.
Thanks for this!

My daughter takes Seroquel, and at first had the same reaction. She has been on it for a year now though and has gotten used to it. She takes it before going to bed at night, and it does allow her to sleep soundly through the night. She can be a bear to wake up in the morning, but once awake, has no trouble remaining that way. This medication has worked far better than any other that she has tried... no depressive stages and only mild manic episodes (comparatively!) She is now getting Bs in school and has done much better over all! Hope this helps!

I take seroquel - went from 200 mg to 300, now I'm at 400 mg.
It does knock me out, and at first I was very groggy in the morning and had a hard time waking up. But after a while my body seemed to adjust to it (as the doctors told me would happen) and now I don't have as much trouble waking up.
I hope you find that is your experience too, because seroquel is great for sleep and for me it is really nice to be able to sleep and not be plagued by nightmares and wakefulness. Give it a few days.......
good luck to you!
Thanks for this!

i took at tiny dose (possibly 25, or maybe even smaller) and it knocked me out for 15hrs straight. i rang my doc and he told me to stop taking it immediately.

i had other physical complications with it too (rapid heart beat, dizziness, being unco etc) so he was worried it could have been a really bad reaction.

without wanting to sound alarmist, maybe it is worth checking with your prescribing doc if this is something that should be happening.

Ok, what is wrong with me? I took Seroquel for the 1st time last night 25mg and had a horrible night sleep. It did not knock me out nor calm me down. Hmmm...maybe it's my body adjusting. Has anyone had other side effects besides it helping them sleep? Not sure if this should be a new thread...sorry if it should be. Let me know and I will move it.

Thanks

Doggy, according to my pharmacist I had a very strong reaction to Seroquel, she told me that usually it does not have that effect on most people, so dont worry there is nothing wrong with you.
They switched me to another med now and it is not having any effect, cannot sleep at all when the med should help so I guess different meds for different people.
Thanks for this!

Well, you said any feedback is welcome... so here's mine.

I took Seroquel briefly about five years ago. I was supposed to start at 200mg and work my way up. My doc wanted me to eventually end up at an 800mg dosage.

I took the pill at about five p.m. Less than 30 minutes later I was out cold. When my alarm went off at seven the next morning, I didn't even hear it. My boyfriend spent fifteen minutes trying to wake me up and when I finally "opened" my eyes, I was so wasted I couldn't even talk. He had to call my work to tell them I wouldn't be in. I slept through most of the day - it wasn't until about three p.m. that I woke up and was able to get up, walk, and speak without slurring my words - and I didn't actually feel "normal" again until the day after that. It was ridiculous. I never took it again.

I suppose I could have stuck with it - every medication I've ever taken has had some side effects, and they eventually subside. But I wasn't just groggy - I was practically comatose. It scared the hell out of me and my boyfriend.

I took 50mgs of Seraquel for a long time at first it made me sleep deep and long. But after a while it helped me get a normal 8-9 hours. I liked it because i did'nt remember my dreams.

I take Seroquel as well, and after a while you adjust to the dosage. Perhaps you could speak to your doctor about possibly splitting the meds in half and taking 12.5mg and adjusting to that, then trying to move up to 25mg. 25mg is basically the lowest dosage but splitting it might help.

When I was on Seroquel, my doc started me at 25 and upped my dose from that point on... I ended up on 200 by the end of the month. If sleep has been a bit of an issue before Seroquel, part of it could be your body just getting caught up. With me personally, it did take time to get used to... but the effects were worth it in the long run.

Around New Year's I started at 200mg and I was just out of it. Now I'm down to 50mg and while I appreciate the sound sleep - I cannot take the inability to wake up and be functional.

I'm talking to pdoc about it this week.

Ditto. I went for a few months thinking I was SO tired and couldn't get out of bed because of depression, then found out it was the seroquel. I like trazadone 25-50mg, I'm generally ok to get up in the mornings.

Ya'll got me all freaked out now. I havent read what it says about seroquiel under the drugs here, just read what ya'll said. I'm suppose to start tonite with 150mg and take it 3 hours before my bed time. then next week it goes up to 300mg. I told my pdoc i will not take it if i start gaining weight. Cause i'm just now starting to lose some of all this weight i gained.

Someone mentioned trazadone. Early last year or so my pdoc put me on that. I would doze off and on at night and the nightmares were horrendous. I quit after three days.

I actaully like where i'm at with sleep. I'm use to it. Sleeping by 3am and up at around 7am. My nightmares i still get but they are toning down. And i'm not tired during the day.

I was recently hospitalized for depression. While there, the docs started me on 250mg of Seroquel. That was a few months ago & I still get knocked out for at least 12 hrs. when I sleep. Hopefully that will go away as I get used to it more.

I started Seroquel last night. Took 25mg which didn't put me to sleep after an hour so took another as my pdoc told me to. I was asleep by the end of the second hour. I got around 8 hours sleep. Am a fair bit tired this morning, it feels like the lack of sleep tired, not lethargic or wasted. But the tired could be because I had two alcoholic drinks last night aswell. If you're worried talk to your doctor, but I will give the Seroquel a chance as I'm not feeling the way i did on haloperidol. Good luck.

Oh yes!
I was also given 25 mg pills and slept 12 hour periods. Even biting it in half, and taking 12.5 mg produced a similar effect.
I still have it in my drawer, and I stuck a label on which says,
"Use with caution. Works like a general anesthetic".

Wow, I couldn't imagine starting at 200mg! I started at 50mg XL (or XR?) and that knocked me out. I took my very first dose about noon, and then had to drive around town all day running errands, man I was glad when I got home! Anyway, after a week or so I upped to 150 extended at night. The 150 extended release stayed in my system so long that I was really hung over the next morning and well into the afternoon. The solution for me was 50mg non-extended for a while, now 100mg. It's been a few weeks and the sedation effects have worn off a bit. I am able to get up early now, provided I take it earlier in the evening.

So, I can't imagine blasting myself with 200mg right off! I'm taking it for MDD/GAD by the way...so dosages might be different.

I know that if I up it again, I've got to take it in small increments. Even though that means being patient with the grogginess I get when I up it each time.

I had gone through a bad trauma with the home care person who was abusing my Mother when she was dying of cancer......the anxiety caused me to loose so much weight I ended up with anorexia & in the medical hospital with IV nutrition, but was having horrible nightmares & couldn't sleep or eat. What a mess I was. My pdoc tried the normal anti anxiety meds that had no effect on the anxiety or the nightmares, so he tried the seroquel. It was the first time I got any sleep, but it did knock me out completely. I would have strange dreams, but they weren't the nightmares. The knocking me out was what I needed. Couldn't wake up in the morning & I was pretty much worthless all the while I took it.....but I ended up on 600mg when I was only weighing in the low 90's so I am sure that increased the knock our effect......but it was what I needed. Luckily I was living with my husband at that time & I didn't have to do anything.

As time passed after the trauma, I was able to lower the dose so I could start functioning again. When I left my husband & moved to the farm I bought in Kentucky, I had to function, so I stopped taking anything & just stuck with my Omega-3 extra EPA which has helped completely with my depression & also with my health & memory......wooohoooo nothing like something that helps the mind & the body.

But I started having anxiety problems again & wasn't able to sleep & was starting to feel really non-functional again. I had some of my 25mg seroquel left & decided to take one just to get some sleep. I made sure I didn't have anything I had to do that day & my poor doggies didn't get any of their potty walks cause I couldn't even get out of bed without being so dizzy......spent the whole day sleeping & finally broke the horrible feeling I was experiencing........ended up with another day this week where I started having the no sleep problem again & took another 25mg at 4am after no sleep for a couple of days......pretty much lost all day Wednesday.....got the doggies out in the late afternoon for their potty walk. I have finally gotten through the lack of sleep horrible feeling it was creating, so think I am good for awhile. I hate the groggy hung over feeling I get with the seroquel, but I love the ability to sleep that it forces me to get. Taking it only when I need it seems to be a good solution & making sure I have nothing necessary to do the day after I take it.

Every side effect you express is definitely the feeling I have gotten from the seroquel, but I only took it when I was desperate & so ill, I wasn't able to function anyway. I was so afraid to take it living alone & not really knowing how I was going to react after a few years of not taking it, but I will definitely keep it for my desperate need for sleep......as it definitely helps.

Debbie

I took 1200mg (3 400mg pills) of seroquil a day for 3 years and stopped a few months ago. It didn't do much to me and hardly ever made me tired. I would recommend taking the pill at bed time but still check with your doctor first to make sure its okay to change the time taking it. No need to worry though I would say, it seems to be that it does that to a lot of people.

I take 400mg. of Seroquel at bedtime. I started at a low dose and over time I got used to it. I take it for thought disturbances. It helps me sleep, but I have no problem getting up in the morning. In other words, your body gets used to it over time and the side effects diminish.
